We have a rebuilt 302 here of unknown origin, coupled to a 70's auto trans, and flexplate. There is an unusual vibratoin, and we are wondering if the flexplate and balancer are not matched. Is there any way to identify if the balancer is the early (light imbalance), or the late (heavy imbalance)? We know the flexplate is the early.

does the damper have a number on it? I think the balance changed in 1981...so if it's a C or D damper it would be from the 60s or 70s, if it's E or F it would be 80s or 90s

You can also tell by the size of the weight on the rear of the balancer and rear of the flywheel. There is a huge differance that you can easily see.Not sure of the years but the later 302 also had differant timing marks as Ford switched the water pump inlet from the passanger side to drivers side thus moveing the timing pointer. 4. do you know if its a roller block? the roller blocks didnt have provisions for early clutch linkage, equalizer bar. should have a tapped hole on the drivers side for this, if it doesnt its probably a 50oz balance motor. the early ones are 28oz

Also the pulley bolt patterns are different. I don't know the exact years but the 28oz had either 3 or 4 bolt pulleys and the 50oz only had the 4 bolt pulley.

thanks guys, by numbers and only the 4 bolt pulley pattern, I am pretty sure that it is a 50 oz balancer. After pulling the trans today, it is without a doubt, a 28oz flexplate.

installing a 50 oz plate and having the trans gone through (would not shift to 3rd) we should be back together and out the door monday.
