350 with 461 camel-hump heads, L79 cam and finned aluminum Corvette valve covers. Pay no attention to the neon blue plug wires. This was before I joined the HAMB and saw the light.
I didn't include 302's mainly because they were not as common as the 5 engines I listed. I had a DZ 302 in my roadster and it ran like Jack the Bear! HRP
I voted for the 327, I still have my early 302 and a couple 327's. I will take either over a 350 any day.
1970 Z28 , now I'm including the Rock crusher 4speed.....only because that sound combo is one of a kind my hambfellows...
Wanted my '32 to look like a (rich) kid had used a new/wrecked C2 Vette to get the power train for his hot rod. 327ci: And the car I've had for 40yrs has this 327 (L76 340hp).. Internet pic, as for some reason there isn't an engine shot of my own on the computer! Many years ago I ran a '69 DZ in this beast: Dave
High compression big cam 327 is hard to beat. Same deal with a 283 is a close second. But man if you were ever lucky enough to hear a real factory 302....
LT-1, if we're talking about assembly line engines. It's your basic DZ 302 -------------- with 50 extra cubic inches.
I've got a 58 283, so that's what get my vote. And like all 283's, it's out of a vette. Sent from my SM-G920V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The small block Chevrolet is the greatest engine ever built, period. No other engine has or will ever do what the "Mouse" has done, from hot rods to a lowly C60 hauling a load of grain into town. That being said, my favorite is the 340 horse 327 in my dads 63 Corvette, with the 350 being a close second. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
That rock crusher w the DZ motor in the Camaro was almost untouchable....had a big block or two get out on me, but pullin gears at high rpm w basically no clutchin was awsome....had the Off road Phase III cam w headers and a crossram.....ooohhh yeah!! Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I've had several 350's and you can't beat the dependability. And on a driver that's paramount. Snowman
Back in the day every SBC was out of a Corvete and every Ford was a police interceptor, just ask the owner! I like all the small blocks, had a few 283's a couple 301's and a few 327's got to say the 327 has the edge for all round bang for the buck. Nothing like a cammed up 327, four speed tri-five Chevy with stiff gears to get your juices flowing!!
Another for 327. Last year I pulled the 350 out of my sedan and replaced it with a 327. Car runs very well..... Now it lives near Huston, Texas.
The 327 300HP in my 63 Impala is original to the car verified by engine stampings, VIN and Suffix Code. It has been bored .060 (now a 337) has TRW domed forged pistons, Comp Can XE262H cam and valve springs, Fulie heads with 202 valves, balanced, headers and a Holley 670CFM Street Avenger Carburetor. Its mated to a Muncie M21 four speed and a 3.73 Positraction rear end and Flowmaster 40's. It has serious cam lope and sounds better through the mufflers then some cars with open headers. It seems to really pull although I haven't pushed it too hard yet as it only has 600 miles on it. Gary
Can't argue with the reliability of a 283. This used 57 engine was dropped into this 32 in 1961. It runs like a top to this day.
I went off the deep end with my .030 over 350. Speed Pro flat-tops, Scat full floating rods, Lunati Voodoo 268/276 cam, Dart SHP 64cc heads and matching dual-plane air gap intake, Holley 700 DP manual secondaries. Muncie M20 with a 2.56 1st gear, out back a 3.89 9" limited slip rear. CR is 9.75:1 and it goes.
The 327 was the pinical of this engine series. There was just something about it. The 327 could do it all. It made great power and yet had good economy. It's successor the 350 could make great power but at the expense of economy. The 350 was not the whole package like the 327. It seems like GM knew this so instead of having one engine that could do it all well, this one engine was replaced by the....350...307...400...305. ..302...
Since completing it, I would go with a minimum 415" but right now it's hard to be unhappy with our 422". Anything else is at the back of the pack. Hard to believe it all started with a 265. But voting on this ballot a L79 is the combo...
