Technical SBC Flywheel

Hey guys....I have a Gen 1 block 2 piece rear seal and a 4L80e transmission, do I need a specal flywheel to hook them together ? or just the 168 tooth wheel.

might look at the converter...how many lugs does it have? if it has six, then you need a flexplate for that...most flexplates are dual bolt pattern for 350/400 converters, which use different bolt circles.

 

It looks like you need a flex plate and not a flywheel

The smallblock Chevy has a different distance from the flexplate to the back block surface than a later model unmentionable Chevy has. For the first couple of years, the unmentionable 6.0 version had a longer crankshaft pad at the back to make up the difference. After that they used the same crank length as all other versions of the unmentionable engine. When doing that, a spacer is inserted to make up the difference. The flexplate used is a flat one as opposed to some others that have different configuretions. The unmentionable engines flexplate will not bolt to a smallblock. The torque converter I have has 6 attaching bolts. There should be a stock flexplate that fits.

Cutting through that, the crank was extended to get the distance to be the same as the smallblock, so the trans should bolt directly to the smallblock without a spacer and with the correct OEM flexplate. Also, be aware that there is a difference in these trans as far as the bolt pattern goes. The later versions have a bolt hole at the 12 oclock location and the earlier versions do not.
