Ok I've been at this stuff for over 45 years and this is one I've never seen an engine crack in this spot before. I was lifting the engine up with the hoist to put it on the engine stand and it just happened to be upside down on the car as I picked it up I was staring at the bottom side of the cam galley and there is was. At first I thought it was a casting flaw but looking closer I believe it really is cracked has anyone ever seen this before?

Sure does look like crack but why there? Photos may be too high rez for the board but they sure show what you want us to see when you click on the little red roadster.

I would say it is a shrinkage crack that happened as the metal cooled when they poured the block.

No to that. closest I've seen is freeze cracks.
the lower cylinder wall looks like it might have a crack at the very bottom.

yes, freeze crack. Had a customer bring in a 454 block that another shop had done a lot of work on.. He assembled it and of course had a pan full of coolant from the first fill..

I put the block in the bake/blast oven, pre heated and bronze welded the crack with Mig welder . Then short filled that side of the water jacket with blok rock. Engine is still running..

Have you actually tried to pressurise the oil gallery to see if it actually leaks.

looks like a flaw in the casting not a crack i would bet its been there since day 1

  13. Looks like a casting thing to me too. I've seen stock cars blow out a cam, maybe they had a similar flaw.

yup ditto on casting flaw , diagnosis

  15. It was a casting flaw that opened up and is now a crack. Bad place too. If you look close it appears to also be cracked on the cylinder skirt.

Unless it is a rare block I would probably just look for another block if it were me.

looks like the the sand core had a crack in it and it cast a reverse (raised) crack on it but its really not a crack. does it feel like a raised rib sticking up???

  17. On a Monday morning at the casting facilities , Somebody dropped the sand core. The cylinder wall on the left looks razor thin and the right looks cracked.

    Got proof, or just xenophobia?

The OP never posted what year the block was made, or where it was cast....
