Art Mortimer downtown mural, corner of Long Beach’s 6th and Golden Ave.

    Hello,

When we lived in a small trailer in 1946-48 near PCH and the Los Angeles River crossing, it was, to us, the center of the world. We had no idea that others lived elsewhere. We were too young to understand the community housing that was on one side of PCH while we lived in the industrial side of PCH in a huge trailer park.

The park was provided by the government at low cost in 1946. My brother and our cousins walked to the elementary school just a few blocks to the South. It was primarily located in an industrial area with a few scattered homes and apartments feeding into the elementary school.

Later on when we were driving, the on ramp to the Long Beach Freeway drove right over the corner of the elementary school. But, back in 1946-48, there was no onramp for any freeway. It was the Los Angeles River that was the big border wall.

The location is one of many murals painted by Long Beach artist, Art Mortimer. He concentrated on some Long Beach history to accentuate along this long wall, in a still conspicuous neighborhood. At least, it does not have graffiti covering over some of the historical figures.

The whole area is still residential but still borders on the old industrial buildings from the way back time machine. The look and feel of the area was popularized by hot rod/motorcycle builder, Jesse James, on the next big street North.

    Hello,

The City of Oceanside, CA has a cultural arts program that includes murals all over the city. The most popular one is the 101 Café scene on the main highway through the downtown area. It is one that you can’t miss. A Pure So Cal hot rod scene for everyone cruising by to see in living color, while driving down/up Coast Highway through the city.

This mural is about .5 miles North toward the pier. (At Topeka and Coast Highway.)

Is is drawn by artist Jon K. The technique is posted at the top photo. The finished mural stands out from blocks away, among the normal painted shops and businesses.

We have to give the artist credit as per OP’s request, since there are those that post without giving anyone credit for the artwork. It is difficult, but finding the artist just takes a few minutes of random searches of similar art.
