Bruce Geislers' salt shaker should be at the top of the list!

Wish my 55' 44944390_2073919212671958_5473677781411823616_n~2.jpg was a Lowey coupe sometimes, but I still love it.

  3. The number on the car in the very first photo is interesting. That number has been used on a roadster for many years that runs at SCTA events. It dates back to a group of men who started their car club in May of 1954, hence the number 5 54 That roadster is currently running each year. I would be curious as to how that number is on the Studebaker. The Studebaker appears to have a roll cage but I doubt that it has ran in an SCTA event with that number.

ECTA and UTSFRA don't use SCTA number list and anyhone can throw a number on a car,,
Now show up to El Mirage or Speedweek, you better have some extra numbers to throw on.

I may have posted these a while back... or it could have been a different thread.
No matter... I think they are worth posting again if I forgot :)
We had so much fun showing up at different dragstrips and surprising people who didn't expect us to do what we did with Stude power.
    259 Lark and 289 Hawk
    What great fun we had.
It was fun beating the blower cars by a big margin, and taking scalps of those who laughed at first :)

    WHY BE ORDINARY ?

The more I see them the more I like them, Studebaker was just so far ahead of the curve on body style.

I was told by an engineer friend that those Studes didn't do so well in a wind tunnel. Anybody else hear that ?

The reason I ask is Howard has one in his junk yard and the top is in great shape if Mike needs it.

Park a '53 Starlight (56.5" roof height) beside any other US '53 or even '55 car. Try to forget the styling for a few minutes. 53 Chevy 63" or so. 55 Bel Air 62-63".

Yes - I did also hear that they were not as aerodynamic as they look. I heard it from a Bonneville record holder for whom I was putting in a new floor pan in his sedan racer. I mentioned my dream hot rod was a Stude Starliner coupe (I like the post version better than the hardtop version - it is more structurally sound). Of course you have to ask yourself "not as aerodynamic compared to what?" - an O/T Nissan coupe or a '53 Dodge or Ford. I think they offer a good combination of traditional good classic looks and sleekness, regardless of its Cd.

One has always been on my bucket list

We actually discussed the idea of using the Studebaker body installed on the chassis backwards. The rear became the front. As crazy as this sounds there are some good aero arguments for doing this. The SCTA rules are the reason that some of the cars take on unusual shapes. Danny Burrows told me a lot of the information that George Poteet's team found out about the "Blowfish" while it was in the Chrysler wind tunnel. I used some of that information on our car. Years later it was the "Blowfish" with Danny driving that took our record. Another example of how competing at Bonneville is different than most anywhere else. Often competitors help each other.

    "Heard it from an Engineer..."
Hearing from "one" guy about "one" (or even two) car...means next to nothing..!
There are as many nose/car shapes done by as many people as there are Stude's on the salt..!
    Some...good, some...not so good..!
I do know that cars (most any) with overly low rear ends...is not a good thing. They need a LOT of venting behind the rear window if they have low tails.

  24. No shit!!!! This one nearly killed me. Broke my spine in 3 places, and a concussion that had me out for 3 days. Accelerating at a bit over 160, this one decided it might be fun to fly. It was, until we hit the lake bed. I have 11 inches of screws and titanium rods holding everything together that will never let me forget May 20th, 1962. Spent my 17th summer in a body cast. Stude's are not my favorite automobile.

  25. Dean, what happened to you made people make them safer as land speed cars, I've noticed many of the cars run big spoilers and wings on the back to keep them planted to the ground and considerably more stable.

I Mike's case, he will not be building a Bonneville car he just wants to emulate the style, low and sleek. HRP

  26. When we were looking to go a bit faster at Bonneville, 200 mph, I talked to a friend that has driven Stude's and has two in their collection. He told me to stay away from the Studies as they start to spin at 175 unless you do a ton of work like wings, negative air pressure routing, chops.
'Stay away from door slammers, get a lakester or streamliners,.,,' so we have a drop tank in the shop.

Hooley had two spins in our Studebaker at over 200 mph. We added more ballast. Weight is your friend at Bonneville
