Technical Sagging brake pedal

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by spillaneswillys, Nov 5, 2019.

  1. The brake pedal on my 34 Dodge does not return the whole way and I constantly have to put my foot underneath and pull it back. It is a floor mount with the Master Cylinder integral to the pedal. I don't kow the make but I know it was bought from Speedway about 6 years ago when Koz built it for me. Any suggestions?

  2. I'm a '43 and I have to use Viagra to get the ol' pedal off the metal.*

*I tried for 2 full minutes not to post....... but the devil made me do it!

Get a return spring on the brake pedal for starters.

If it’s anything like a Chevrolet the pedal goes thru a bushing which is part of the M/C, it has a grease fitting and the grease has probably hardened up. Try greasing it, next will be a clean out.

  5. how would I put a return spring on a floor mount pedal?

This is how the factory did it in 1955. Make sure there's clearance all around the spring and NO binding.

  9. Thanks for the tips. I have greased the fitting at different times but it doesn't completely resolve the problem.I like the looks of the 55 Buick spring and will need to see if I can make that work.

  10. It's a simple job to install a return spring, this will work with slight modification on any floor mounted brake pedal. HRP

Im dealing with the same issue on a 33 dodge, same pedal set up. One thing that helped mine a little was to lengthen the adjustable, threaded rod going into the MC. This actually pushed my pedal all the way into the up position.

Might want to check and see if you still have clearance between the rod and the piston!

The M/C should never be used to return the pedal. The weight of the pedal will always keep the brakes slightly engaged. Also the rod should never come in contact with the sides of the cylinder. That can have catastrophic results.

What do you mean by “clean out” and how do you do it? I’m having the same issue. I’ve greased the pedal, but not having much luck with mine returning to the normal position.
