Hot Rods Safer in a group or all alone?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mikec4193, Feb 9, 2023.

  1. Hi Fellow Hambers
I remember talking with some of the guys I work with that ride motorcycles and I asked them why they always ran in packs and the one fellow said it was safer...
So it got me to thinking...when ever I drove any of my old heaps around my town I was always watching the front and the back and the sides at all times (head on a swivel for sure).
All those daily drivers are so incredibly more nimble than an old leaf spring carbureted vintage jalopy....and they have constant distractions going on too now a days.

So would I be safer in a group of all heaps as opposed to the running around town with a bullseye on my back side?

Just wondering what you guys prefer...
    Thanks in advance
    MikeC

Maybe, but a whole row of cars with brakes that are less capable than most of the current vehicles - could lead to quite a pile up.
    Leave plenty of spacing.

It is more fun with a few hot rod traveling together, you get a lot of normal cars speeding up to ride beside and check it out though.

    To much thought... Roll !

  5. I typically just do like Joe mentions and drive alone. I try to just drive my old cars like it is a newer one although I do respect the difference in braking, etc. vs. cars with powers disk brakes.

  6. I almost always travel alone. No one from my area goes long distances.
I'd guess I have 140k miles solo and maybe another 20k in groups of two to sixty rods.
Don't stay home. Get on the road.
    And be safe.

I've done it both ways, it really doesn't matter to me. Most of my friends don't drive two wheelers. And YES...your head must be on a swivel in either case !
I've got just over 400,000 miles on two wheels since 1986. Had three semi-hard crashes, and a coupla minor ones, thanks to folks NOT paying attention. One was my fault !
One good thing that's come from driving a two wheeler...is that I drive my cars with basically the same attitude as when on two.

Don’t care to drive with another friend or relative. With any type of four wheel vehicle.
    Especially on long distances.
It’s always nice to have another helper in the case of a breakdown but I just don’t like the idea of not only watching morons on the road, but I feel the need to watch for my other traveling car with me. It just doesn’t feel safe for me.

I don’t mind traveling alone, although traveling with others has it benefits if there is a breakdown.
On two wheels I almost always go solo.

  11. it's kinda fun runnin with a few buddies, mostly I drive alone;...at one time there was a hunnert car pileup in Illinois!....seemed to happen once a year!

  12. I also ride my bike alone I suppose since it is my transportation to work and back mainly. It’s only 30 miles each way though, so short trips.

  13. I drive one of the hot rods almost daily and do most of it alone, sometimes traveling to a big show out of town I might ride with 2 or 3 other guys. HRP

Most of the time I drive alone. The few times I have driven with friends is because we are going to the same cruise night or show. I rode motorcycles in the sixties and rode alone then too.

Bikes riding in packs can be more dangerous in my opinion...the riders tend to lapse into either parade mode so they're holding up traffic (and it's difficult for cars to try to pass them since they're taking up so much space), or they decide it's a big race and the guys in back are riding over their heads to keep up. I don't like riding with more than one or two other bikes.

I like cruising around my small towns by myself. When you ride with a group there always seems to be an idiot that wants to do a hold my beer moment.

it doesn't matter to me either way, but most times I'm with a group because I like to spend time with my son and friends

I guess I'm screwed because all of my daily drivers are 60+ years old or, when not driving, I ride motorcycles.

I do most of mine alone unless I run into a buddy going the same place as I am. When we had two cars, the wife drove one and I drove the other and we went together. More fun with her riding with me, so we sold her car.

Being out in the rural country, I don’t get into the bigger towns much. Just not worth taking the chance some texting driver in their appliance running into me. Bigger towns equal more people which equals more chances to get ran over. I’m not a crowd person, I prefer smaller groups. I know a lot of you live in large cities and don’t have that luxury, but around here we worry more about deer crossing the road in front of us than other drivers.

In a car I am usually alone, On my Harley I have a couple guys I ride with, we know each others riding habits pretty well. Traffic is pretty crazy, doesn't matter in a car or on a bike, you always have to look out no matter where you are. Lippy

On bikes with a few friends we ride single file and staggered ..Riding in formation is foolish in my opinion.. One goes down and you all go down.....On topic vehicles , the same, keep reasonable distance from the others..

I'm always by myself, there's nobody else out this way who cares to actually drive their cars.

I can't keep up if they decide to put the hammer down anyway. Put the radio on and watch the world go by. Keep a wary eye open for others who aren't gonna keep an eye open for you. Pay attention to the CAUTION CURVE 25MPH signs and most of all, enjoy it.

I'll never figure out and fix all the problems if it just sits in the driveway.

    I don't do motorcycles.
Probably 80% to 90% of the time I drive the coupe or the truck its a one vehicle parade, but sometime others join us for at least part of the journey. The coupe and the truck were driven over 9,000 miles last year total.

I’ve ridden for many years and preferred a small group but at 78 I’ve stepped off and my HD is for sale.
Driving close to Little Saigon, Taxifornia I drive everything with caution. I’m even cautious at green lights where I can’t see both directions. It doesn’t stop me from using my car but on the freeways most are crazy fast even in construction zones..

I drive my rod, alone some ,but enjoy running with one or two other, even more so,then a bigger group. It's all fun.
Longer trips are great to run with others. Even though, often,if some thing in our group needs fixing.it's more often then not=me as the fix'y for them. I do keep a tow rope too, behind my seat among other fix'y crap.

Group travel should never be a "parade" or kept all cloistered in. Just pick a route and roll your own. If 1 of ya is a ¼ mile ahead, so what. Move around too. Pass one of your pals. Let them pass you. One or all will get the attention of fellow motorists better if you're all in an area, but not in some formation. With cell phones its easy to let one of you know if there's mechanical troubles, or someone has to stop or whatever (so answer your damn phone if it rings). In my case I plan to use my car as a daily in season once done. Be kinda hard to get a group to follow me to the shop every day.

Some people enjoy travelling with other vehicles in a group. Good for them.
    I'm not one of them.

Mostly with a small group but would rather be alone. Set my own pace. Faster then most. A lot of people I know won't drive there cars.
So who wants to travel to Lloyds together?

  30. Sounds like you're paranoid and I ain't talking Sabbath.
I drive or ride the same no matter if it's the newest car, the oldest car or the bike, I drove truck for a living so I'm more than capable of leaving the correct distance and placement in the lanes.
My old car club used to travel together, man there's nothing worse than going 10 mph under what everyone else is doing and still having the accordion speed up slow down bullshit. ugh
