Here's a couple of better pics of the main caps. They was on my work bench this morning when I got to work. As soon as I can, I'll get a block set up in the mill! IMG_20220426_184129364.jpg IMG_20220426_184201289.jpg

IMG_20220430_143247781_HDR.jpg I'm working on a filler bushing to put the racing column in the factory column's position. The kid is faster than me!!

  4. What degree did you set your caster? I set mine at the 6-7⁰ mark, it'll set straight when it's up on jack stands, but when I pulled the drag link of it falls over. Don't know if I'm good or not o_O

I originally set mine at 10,, but after talking with Quain. I cut mine back to 6... My last bracket car was a a-arm car. Set it at 10..car ran like it was on a string! After studying and asking about a straight axle set up. I decided to cut it back a bit.. I'll know more once it hits the track.
To be honest,,, I'm not sure what I'm doing! This is my 1st gasser!! Thing probably will hurt me!!!!

  6. I hear ya loud and clear lol, I read on here somewhere to shoot for the 6-7⁰ mark. With the wheels cut, you can see it. I guess I was afraid it was still too much. I've only driven mine down the driveway a couple of times, I guess we'll see what happens on the highway. I used the speedway kit, and I'm thinking I'm gonna have to pull a leaf, it's pretty stiff. Love your build brother

Use one of those good-look'in 4 bolt mains you had machined!!!!
Should hold that column in place just fine!
(I'm sure you can just 'whip-out' somethin on the lathe...no prob)

I had my Shoebox caster as little as 2° but car is relatively low and not that fast [102].

I'm hoping this nightmare will make at least 118 in the 1/8th!

  14. Assuming you'll get a weight break, compared to same size SBC or SBF ?

Yes, I'm getting a break, but getting weight added for the intake.

  16. Good...How about a break for the wheelbase, ala the Gapp and Roush "taxi" ? ;)

Back to the engine today! Studs came in for the mains. Placed the caps in place so y'all can get a idea of what needs to be machined. IMG_20220516_192538889.jpg IMG_20220516_192144330.jpg IMG_20220516_192544851.jpg

I got another piece of the puzzle today. Looks like this weekend we'll be putting the mock up block and trans back in the car.
The clutch and brake pedals will be next on the list to make! IMG_20220517_173730543.jpg

Thank you!! Hopefully it will be going to work with me in a couple of weeks for the line bore and hone.
Then it's back to the money making process. I have depleted my hobby account!!

I would never dare to call myself a machinist but I really enjoyed making stuff on my mill and lathe over the years. I did all kinds of stuff looking for a reason to use the machines. Very satisfying for a tinkerer.

Didn't get as much done today as I wanted to. We got the mock up engine and transmission in place,, trying to figure out the steering shaft routing. IMG_20220521_123949985.jpg IMG_20220521_123959154.jpg

The steering shafts are cut to length. Shaft support welded into place. Now I need to clean the fab bench off!! The joints will be Tig welded. IMG_20220528_123133733.jpg IMG_20220528_123145148.jpg

Back to the engine today. One crank option for those on a budget is a old 425/early 400 crank. The diesel and big block Olds share the same main journal size and spacing.
One of the things you have to do is turn down the counter weights to clear the inside of the block. IMG_20220530_090544079.jpg IMG_20220530_092834313_HDR.jpg

How many of these cranks do you have?
Do you have enough parts to build 3 engines to test and swap?

    SEGA is hard on engines
