Paint! Primer is better than rust. Whenever I see a rust finished car, I think rat rod, even if it is built well.
I was not there "back in the day", but I would think a hot rod or custom would be primered before they were on the road. I couldn't see too many cruising in rust. Even in the early 70's us young guys had a lot of primer spots on our cars. Rust indicated you did not care much for your car.

It looks WAY better painted, particularly with dry lakes dust on it! Nice, nice car!

  12. I'm not that old, but when I was a kid, rust was the worst, even a little bit on the bottom of the rocker panel sucked. A car covered in it, you gotta be kidding me! That car kicks ass now with the nice shine on it.

  13. I vote for paint. I have a shop full of rusty right now, sure would like to see some shiny on at least one.

Funny Statement coming from " OLSKOOLRODDER "

Some RAT RODS even have Paint .....

Lack of Paint has nothing to do with being a Rat Rod.

  15. Paint it to protect it, then drive the shit out of it to start collecting your own patina. Looks cool in paint (didn't look to shabby before).

I like seeing the progression of a car. If they're being driven during the build and they're rusty or primered is great, but they're not finished until they have paint. That said, sometimes bad paint ruins what could have been a nice car.

Well said!!! we never did rusty ... even a small spot of rust got ground and fixed, I have no idea how it became cool to some.

I don't consider his car a "rat rod", and I hate rat rods more than anyone. Look up early drag racing on you tube there is a video of a RPU that looks a lot like his truck.

anyways I like it black, the only thing I think it needs is a number painted on it. That would be killer

Hell Teep, I'd just say it looks like you finally got everything sorted out on it and had time to get the body and paint squared away. You have to love it in that larger photo that someone posted. That gets the "Yea, that thing looks right on the money now" vote from a lot of us. One more "roundtoit" taken care of.

To me the best approach is to paint it and then let it get fucked up.

I could not agree more I like to paint mine while I'm still working on it so it has all the dings and chips from woking on it, that reminds me of my dads old race car, they would spend all week getting it ready for saturday night, and there were grease streaks and dings around the fender wells and hood from tools laying on it. To me thats what makes a hot rod have character.
