I’m looking to add OE look rubber covers on my glass running boards for the 33. Being one piece, I’m guessing the covers need to be made for that specific application. Sure could use some advice from anyone in the know about application and sources.
I can't think of the sources off hand, but you can buy the rubber and trim materials and cut to fit your application. When you put rubber on the running boards, people will stand on them. Not just passengers, but also at shows. Are your glass boards up to the task?
I had the paint shop outline and spray my new steel boards with bed liner when they painted the car. Thin layer of bed liner on top, body color everywhere else. No chips, cracks or issues in three years of daily driving. Tuff as nails and can be stepped on all the time with no worries.
Hemi, By the looks of your avatar I'm assuming you're talking '33 Ford. If so, Bob Drake probably has the best running board covers. Are your running board's stock?
He said in his original post they're glass. From his avatar photo, they appear smooth. I'm not sure if stock 33 boards are ribbed or not but that would impact whether stock stuff would fit.
Molded 33/34 covers are USA made by Vintique and available from CW Moss or your favorite early Ford supplier for about $350. Make sure your covers include the proper adhesive. You'll need a second set of hands and a ton of clamps and some wooden clamping strips. Best done on a workbench or table where your assistant can stand on the other side of the workbench. It's like rolling down linoleum. Fairly tedious. Be mindful of your air temp when using the adhesive. Look for an online tutorial. Stock 33/34 running boards are flat but have a zillion pin holes in them to allow the adhesive to bite. This may/may not be a factor being that your glass boards are smooth. You'll probably at least need to DA your boards for proper adhesive prep. The easy out was to use Bob Drake (or old V8 shop) new vulcanized boards made from the original molds, but those have been out of production for several years. NOS sets command upwards of 2 grand...
Thanks guys! Yep, 33 Ford Tudor Sedan. The seamless glass fenders already have that beaded edge and I’ve noticed repops also have that bead along the bottom edge. I guess I could trim it off but suspect the glass moulds are somewhat different than OE. Bed liner would be easiest but would really like something with ribbing (she said). Moss sounds like a good place to start. Prob. have to scuff the paint for good adhesion?
If you want ribs, see post 78 in this thread. Customs - Flexseal on running boards | Page 3 | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com) They are now 25 years old and still look like new.
