I´m from Germany and stayed the last half year in Detroit for work. A few weeks ago I bought my 59 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 near Detroit. I fixed all the small things and bought the tools I need for the trip. Last week on Thursday I started together with my german friend the journey. Our frist stop was chicago. Without power steering not the best idea to drive through chicago downtown. But the car was not to hot and the old lady runs good.
After Chicago we drove over Springfield, St Louis, Springfield, Joplin, Tulsa to Oklahoma City and Amarillo where we sleep this night, right now.
We couldn´t drove the whole Route 66 cause we are a bit in a hurry to reach the Speedweek at August 9th. But from tomorrow the 66 is the only street for us ;)
For sure, it´s a very old car and there could happen something anytime. Right now, we had some problems with the generator, 2 destroyed valve lifter, the damper was slacking around and two flat tires. But we are still on the way and enjoy the wonderfull street with all the things around.
And if we have to stop for a problem with the car, there are so many cool people which like to help us, wow.
So if somebody see us on our way feel free to speak to us or if somebody know some cool places which are not described in the normal map, say it ;)

Awesome! I was driving home from work last week (Thursday?) and I passed you guys on west bound M-14 just west of Plymouth. I remember thinking how cool it was that someone was driving was an Oldsmobile. Happy trails and godspeed!

When you open the car door and finally hear the soft crunch of the salt under your feet... you're gonna get chills...you're at the place we gearheads think of as holy ground...hope it grabs you like it did me.

Enjoy the trip. I have driven the full length of Route 66 (although not in anything as cool as your car) and been to Bonneville. Both great experiences.
    Safe travels.

Driving an old car on a long trip to Bonneville is a special thing to do. It might be the once in a lifetime trip and with an old friend it is even better. Bonneville is a special place as you can visit the pits and witness the starting line and every one is friendly, something about the hot rod community its like a big family.

  17. again...happy trails to youse guys....and best of luck on the trip.....that's a cool Olds 2dr post car you have....Rocket on!

Today we started from Amarillo and our first stop was, of course, the Cadillac Ranch. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1407310401.724564.jpg

After that we ate a good Burger in a small restaurant in Vega. The sheriff and the mayoral were there too, so I think it was the best restaurant over there ;) Next stop was the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian where you can sign the pick up and (I don't know why) the Impala

After that we visited the museum in Russel's Truck and Travel Center with a few nice cars

Alone on the road, we saw something like a junkyard called Mother Road Memory Iron ? Maybe somebody knows it. There were, in the middle of nowhere, some nice cars

After the two ghost towns which were not soo interesting, we drove to the Route 66 Auto Museum in Santa Rosa. I saw already in an other post some pictures last week.

In Moriarity we had a good dinner at El Comedor. We cruised than through Albuquerque and ate icecream in old town. Right now we are in Grants where we want to start tomorrow after the car check..

    Hey Flo, hey Bömpf,
nice to see you guys here at the HAMB! I´m very happy to see you on Route66. Have fun and enjoy all the cool stuff along that great road and have a safe trip to Bonneville. I will follow you here in that blog all the long way to the salt flats and later to SoCal....

Best wishes, your old fellow from Germany,

    Torsten

  22. Krauts.....that's funny in this overly politically correct world! :) You guys are living the dream. I was recently driving along parts of RT 66 and I was amazed at the number of foreigners out there driving that route. You guys have fun and thanks for taking us along. Here's a picture of some bikers from Norway I saw traveling on 66 last June.

After the car check like every morning ( which took today a bit longer, cause it's not easy to check the oil in a differential of a little taildragger ;) ) we drove to Gallup. The first stop was the nice Aurelie Diner.
A few miles after Gallup we heard that something was wrong with the suspension. We stopped directly and I tried to get out of the car BUT there was a Dingo right next to us, laying in the bushes. Puhh. We drove to a safe place and I saw that the screws were ripped out of the damper, damn! Luckily we could get new nuts in an Auto parts store in Gallup. Late but on the road again we drove to the next target - Flagstaff.
We were to late for the meteor crater and except the nice Querino Canyon Bridge we only saw the road. Only a straight rough road the rest of the day. And guess what. I already can say that this is one of the best Trips I've ever made..

    Hey Flo,

I think, in such cases, if there is a dingo layin´ in the bushes, it is better to have some cans of dogfood in the trunk of your Olds :-D

Have a good day, dudes! And enjoy the way to Kingman ;-)

p.s.: Prefer a Dingo in the bushes, as a rattlesnake in the trunk^^

  30. Where's the obligatory Pie photos? Can't have a roadtrip without pie pictures!

I've made that trip in an old car and regret not taking enough photos.

    Keep them coming!
