My parents had a 1951 Chevy 2 door. When the 1956 Ford "Safety" cars came out, the Ford dealer ran a special, 2 sets of lap seat belts for $19.99, installed. The mechanic told my dad: "I installed the rear belts far apart, to keep the boys separated".

Hit some cool spots today... the Iconic Twin Arrows tradings post, now abandoned... and the old Two Guns Zoo. Also, abandoned. Then off to lunch and checked out a few other spots on our way to the next motel. Made it through Arizona and made it into New Mexico. The old Rambler did great.. she is still running! Lol

Glad to hear it's all good and everyone is still smiling! Kind of sad to see those abandoned places but time moves on.

Did you loose your gas cap or is it just black?

I lost my original one off my roof somewhere in Illinois on the first part of the trip. :( so mad at my self... got sidetracked cleaning the bugs off the windshield. That’s a cheap plastic one I found that fit from an Autozone.

  8. Oh, come on! :(

You mean you couldn't have taken another shot of this from a slightly different angle so it looked like there was a giant arrow sticking in the Rambler? Or maybe one of your kids? o_O

You're thinking of going back now, aren't you...?

  9. Been out there several times , love that area from Albuquerque to Flagstaff.

  10. The media is always the problem. The worst areas are BIG cities and around major amusement parks. The reason it's so shocking at Disney is you go from inside were it's a fantasy world to homeless, kinda dirty real life outside. I remember growing up watching the L.A news (in Orange County) and thinking there was a shootout on every street corner, everyday in L.A..........turns out there wasn't.......it's just once a week :).

Another Awesome day! The Rambler still lives!!! 100 degrees today but as long as I have both fans on and keep her at 60-65 she is good. Also as usual we took a bunch of really cool pics. I hope you guys aren’t tired of the wagon in almost every pic... but she is the star not us. Every where we stop people come over to take pics and are amazed how far we have gone. I’m just under 5000 miles... if thinking with the extra out of the way stops we have planned we will have put well over 6000 miles on this thing by time we get home. I’m not a Rambler or a Wagon guy... I’m a hot rod and custom guy. But this wagon has definitely changed my out look on a pretty much bone stock original wagon. I do miss a V8 when wanting to pull out though. :)

Luv this thread! It truly brings back memories.
I was 12 in the late '60s and every summer my parents would take me and my 2 brothers camping up in Northern California in the exact same car! Only difference was, our Rambler was tan instead of green and we had camping gear in the roof rack instead of suitcases! Ahhh….the good ol' days!

I JUST found this thread. Can't believe the coincidence in that we just arrived home in Pasadena, CA after leaving May 13th to follow the Gulf Coast along I-10 to Key West, FL and return via I-40 - which hits some of the same places you are seeing. 6,312 miles total though not in a vintage car. We are wussies and did it in a Class C RV towing a Fiat 500.

We were even on Route 66 in a few places along the way, most notably in Flagstaff, AZ - though it is very modern there.
EDIT: After reading the entire thread, we were in Flagstaff at the same time Friday but we were in a campground on Rt 66.

Man it was HOT and HUMID on this trip. I can only imagine what it's like in the Rambler with kids along. Brave man! IMG_5252.JPG

Loving your trip in so many ways !!! You are setting a new standard on how to take a vacation with your family... takes a lot of guts to travel that far with your wife and kids in an old car.... I'm humbled

Thank you... if this thing makes it to my driveway, it will definitely be an Epic trip and a real accomplishment for me. You have no idea how many people tried to talk me out of doing it in this car. Everyone said take the wife’s Car... Plus, none of the photos would look cool with a Ford Explorer parked in them. Lol

I’ll trade you the Rambler for your setup... just let me know where you want to meet. ;)

  19. I just remembered , Dad had a rambler station wagon back in 1966-67 . It was darker green , we drove it when we moved from Cleveland Tenn to Columbua SC. Dad said American motors were tough cars . I know later I had a Gremlin with the strait 6 and it was bomb proof.. Gonna look for pics of the ole station wagon.

Congratulations to you and your family and thanks for taking us along!

I did a similar vintage car R1-02787-0005.jpg trip in 1985 and had the same jet problems with anything above about 6700'. Photo is of my 59 BelAir at the Grand Canyon. We made it home and you will too.

Much respect to you for taking this trip. There’s not a handful of parents that would attempt this. Looks like your kids are truly having fun seeing the sites instead of having their noses stuck in their phones oblivious to the world around them. Thanks for sharing your trip!

What would be interesting when you return is writing a brief story for AMO (American Motors Owners Association) with some pictures. https://amonational.com
Rambler owners (like me) love reading stories like this.

27EEC40A-C6C3-4C3C-826C-CC4E7D8034DF.png So... Route 66 is a bit rough in some spots. This afternoon my exhaust strap decided to give way but rested on the rear, so no harm done. A couple bolts and some metal plumbing strap was a quick fix. No auto store was close and I didn’t want to take the chance of cracking the manifold. Only lost an hour and hit the road to the hotel. I’ll take these little issues all day... I’m still pretty proud of this old car.
