  1. Traveling I-40 thru Gallup. NM [IMG]

Be sure to visit the oldest continuously operated restaurant on Route 66

The Eagle Cafe at 220 W. Route 66 in Gallup, NM
has been in business since 1889 as a cafe & restaurant [IMG]

I stopped in a few days ago for eggs & porkchops for breakfast - but they are known for their
    lamb stew [IMG]

Say hi to Melissa for me [IMG]

  3. Threads like this are great info. with a bit of luck i'll be treading the well worn trail in a couple of years, and it's great to read the do's and don't's.
I don't want to miss anything and for me it is the journey and not the destination. Using your imagination might be par for the course these days but I just want to get out of the car in the middle of nowhere and imagine being a passenger in an old rpu loaded to the gunnels heading for Californie and out of the dustbowl. A sort of a 'Grapes of wrath' homage if you like. Saving....saving....

would have to say make the trip your "own" as well with most have said you HAVE to take your time to soak it all in... you must get out and speak with the locals in the not so touristy modern spots so to speak... they are a wealth of info and a source of the abandoned less traveled parts... where you can lose yourself in the nostalgia of it all and local printed maps too that give superb detail down to the who, what, when and where of their stretch of the mother road...
