Question for right coast guys, or anyone who can tell me if they know of COATS AUTOMOTIVE in wall township n.j. He makes a spherical rotary valve cylinder head. This has been done in the 1920's and 30's by Cross, Minerva, Tacconi, and Aspin.None could control oil consumption. Coats may have a handle on this.Like to know if he is still in production.
The way I understand it, its basicly a Ballvalve rotating in the Intake or Exhaust port. And You need one for each port ( so that is 16 for a V8 ) How does this compare to the Sleeve operated Engines some Car manufacurers experimented with in the 20s? I believe they had Oil control problems as well, but some Car owners liked them because they ran so quiet...
really interesting stuff......are they still in bussiness?are they in production cars yet? Looks like all the dates on the sites were 2002?
Ralph Sarich was working on the orbital engine. It's since become a "lighter" version by applying the basis for the technology into new engines, so it is being used (some new scooters, Mazdas, can't remember what else...). It's more a direct injection system than anything else, plus it's the technological intellect that's sold. Standard valves are still used. ORBITAL ENGINE COMPANY
There was a famous local guy here by the name of Bill Phillips that was building his own rotary valve engine to run in an alcohol dragster in the early 80's. He built it all himself but was plagued with leakage problems. He passed away a few years back without realizing his dream. I'm sure with todays technology the leakage issues would be solved.
