I came to the US in 1968 with no english speaking learned it for 2 years and graduated in June of 1970 Huntington Park HS in Calif 2 months later I joined the US Coast Guard ( damage control )and station in San Francisco Ca. Stationed in Oahu Hawaii from there Hokaido Japan Loran Station for 1 year lost my dad while in Japan returned to Long Beach Calif and Station in Terminal Island for another year on a 40 foot patrol boat search and rescue. I received an honorable discharge in August of 1974. I am proud of having served this country even so that I am not a US citizen hopefully soon. Regardless of any Holidays I raise the US flag at my office every day just because it is the right thing to do.

My grand father served 1914 / 1918 in France. With many medals including purple heart

My father 1941 / 1944 France ( Normandie France ). Few medals including a letter from the German government for saving a German officer in war time.

    My sister Navy in 1969 / 1973

I want to Thank all of you in the above and below post for serving this country to make it better
    today. HAPPY VETERANS DAY !!!!!!

    Thanks !!

I'm not a veteran but was in the Civil Air Patrol for 7 years.

Grandfather was a welder/fabricator USAF Korea
Father was pressurization/HVAC tech on C130's in Panama USAF. Dad is still in the C.A.P. going on 20 years soon.

Would be interested to know if any other HAMBrs are C.A.P. folks...

  12. My son lurks here:
Joined the USMC the day following 9/11 and did 2 tours of Iraq.

    Lcpl, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion / 1MEF
They were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.

His 1st tour included the inital invasion of Bagdhad. On his 2nd tour, he was in the battle of Fallujah that was retaliation for the hanging and burning of 3 Americans from a bridge outside of town. A couple months later his Humvee was hit with an RPG. He sustained a shrapnel injury to his thigh. Today he is doing well physically but does have 'war issues' that will probably be with him for life. About 50% of his company received Purple Hearts, some posthumously.

Imagine my surprise picking up this Time Magazine in the doctor's office 2 months after it was released. My son is the 'kid' wearing glasses standing next to the Humvee. Photo taken April 5th, 2004 by Chris Borrachle, an imbedded reporter.
