I also grew up in upstate NY (just east of Albany). Yes, not a lot of hot rods in the area. I did live in SoCal though, vicariously through Rod & Custom and Hot Rod magazines. Then actually moved to SoCal in '88 and lived there for many years deeply immersed in the hot rod world. But it was those magazines showing cars I could only dream about the guys building them that really shaped my interests. I've had a lot of hot rods over the years but the '33/'34 coupes have always been my favorites and have been lucky enough to have owned two (including the current one).

This thread is just another example of how great the HAMB is. Stories of my hot rod heroes growing up from those that were actually there.

Dale was nice enough to respond to a thread I posted about putting a 392 in my '34 coupe. He emailed me some photos of a '33 that he put a Hemi in and gave me some advice. Thought that was pretty cool of him to do.

And Kevin and I have been conversing about my '34 build. Looking forward to getting it on the road and driving down to SoCal to show it to him.

I just find it so cool for guys like these to give a nobody like me the time of day let alone advice on building my car. Thanks guys and thanks to the HAMB!

@modelAsteve , yes, I painted John's 32 Tudor and his 40 LaSalle convertible sedan. The LaSalle was quite a project, came in as a completely stripped car and 20 crates, lotsa funo_O:eek:

Glad that you chimed in. We’re all here to learn, listen and expose others to this fantastic experience called Hot Rodding. I’m always glad that there were ways to learn before any of us were driving age. That’s what this thread is all about. Learning about unsung hero’s who have been inspiring hot rodders for a few decades. What’s the progress on the 34 3W?

Hey Kevin. The '34 is tucked away for the winter. I had the roof blow off one of my garages (severe wind gusts here) so I have to fix that and then finish building another garage. Hope to be back on the car by end of march.

I helped John get that car out of it's very long slumber. The top pieces were all individually wrapped in old news paper. We unwrapped them on his living room floor and tried to figure them out. Finally settled on lefts and rights got it close. Then he took it to the chromer and up to you guys to figure out. Good times!

As I remember all the chrome was dipped in cosmolene and wrapped in cellophane. He was under the impression that it had all been rechromed but, after we cleaned it up, none of it was redone. Yeah, that was quite a project, trying to figure out how everything went back together. Fortunately the PO was very meticulous when he disassembled it.

Can’t say that I recall this one, was there a wheel swap? I do dig it though. It’s a bitchen Heirloom just knowing all the characters that played a role in its existence. Thx 4 video :cool:

^^^ Yes there was a wheel swap. When I bought the car it had Centerline wheels that I didn't like. It now has American Racing wheels That are 15x6 on the front and 17x91/2 on the rear. I also made the push bar that fits over the traylor hitch ball, installed the water reserve Moon tank on the front, tinted the widows and installed a tachometer over the windshield next to the rear view mirrow. Will do detail picks next time. Thanks for lookin...........

Thank you. I can relate to you not knowing how to post pictures. I always did it from photos on my digital camera and now am trying to figure out how from my tablet. Not easy trying to embrace newer technology.

Sent Bud Bryan copies of some of the pages of this thread - glad to get them - wishes that he had duplicates of some of the photos - Barney Navarro gave him the fresh 59 A flathead that he used - Gray Baskerville was with him when his car was hit - says the freshly restored roadster is now on display at 3 Dog Garage

This is really a long shot, but I remember a DJ on New York Am 770 radio Bruce Morrow (SP?) who went by Cuzn Brucie in the early Sixties. The age is consistent. Growing up in New Jersey, I listened to him all the time. Possibly the same guy?

Question??? I bought VanAmburg's 26 T coupe in 1997 at Shades of the Past rod run in Gatlinburg Tenn. from a guy from Ohio that bought it off a speciality car lot in Florida. Stan said he had the car a year or so and thought he sold it to someone in Arizona. It had a California 1997 tag on it when I bought it. Anyone know of the history of this car prior to 97? If so I would like to hear it. Thanks in advance...........

  29. ...Could have been '76 or '77. I can't remember for sure, but I think NSRA was only at Timonium for 3 maybe 4 years before the move to York.:)
