Who doesn’t like just taking off on a long journey in hopes of finding a good deal or treasure that can’t be turned down? I’m setting home now still pooped out from making a 17 hour road trip with my son just yesterday. He finally came across a 50 ford custom found in the deep hills of Kentucky. 3rd owner, second paint and a sweet running flathead with overdrive. The interior is just spotless and only one small rust bubble area at the bottom of one door. The old fellow selling it traded even up on my sons pickup. He wanted something different I guess. It was a fun trip but we sure had our usual share of challenges. Blew a trailer tire on the beginning of our trip back to Ohio. Borrowed trailer, no spare of course! 5:00pm. Every place closing to find a replacement. Opened the trunk of the old ford and found a brand new biasply in there. Low and behold it fit the trailer and got us 7 miles down the road where we found a Farm and Fleet and a new replacement tire and rim. Great fun to tackle these problems together and have everything work out. Memories of a lifetime.
Looks like a great 50 and I am sure it was a great trip with your son! I am sure he will enjoy it. My son is trying to talk me into driving a 53 Victoria back from California even this morning... We will see.
Wow! That trailer tire didn't just go flat, it evaporated! The '50 Ford looks in great condition. Color looks to be green. Real nice car, have fun with it.
Cool story - at least this journey ended on the very positive side - often the search ends up with disappointment - trailer problem is all too common - people spend countless hours and money on their ride but, forget trailer maintenance - Ford looks great, look forward to more pics
The time that you spent with your son is priceless. He will remember it, and have good stories to tell after you are gone.
Thank you everyone. Yes memories are the most important part. Yes we seen all kinds off black coming off the back of the trailer. Take a look at the rear end of the fender. That’s close to 10 ga steel.
I want to know how that trailer tire came apart like that and didn't destroy the fender? And then you had a tire to put on the wheel and it still held air? Looks like it was a great road trip in more ways then you thought.
Gene, The trailer fender is really well built and a thick material. We had to remove the fender since it was bent. Luckily The old fords spare had air and the 15” ford rim fit the trailer hub. We couldn’t believe how lucky we were. I bet that alone saved two hours of down time. Hell we even talked the manager of farm and fleet to use a lift truck to raise the trailer so we could remove the ford spare and install the new trailer rim and tire.
On one of my expeditions to retrieve a car, I hit something along the edge of the road that took out both trailer tires on that side at the same time. I had one spare. I put the spare on, then used a ratchet strap to draw up the other axle as close to the trailer bed as I could get it. About 20 miles down the road I was able to get a pair of new tires. I have no idea how I came up with that idea, but it worked that time.
