I was minding my own business at home one night recently and decided to look at the Hamb classified ads when I suddenly see a Chevy 235 engine for sale in Republic, MO (near Springfield). And as soon as the weekend came I was on a solo road trip for the next 6 hours which included portions of old Route 66 to see my pal Dick Craig (road kill pu) to buy his extra engine that came with his new 54 Chevy. I arrived at his home mid day to find him under the hood installing a Fenton intake and headers.
And I almost did not recognize him due to lack of ponytail and some recent weight loss...

Dick had also been doing some landscaping with some big rocks in his back yard and showed me his Koi pond which had two supplies of rushing water going into it which made for a very relaxing sound...
as big as these things are...I would suggest to Dick that he consider raising some trout so we can have a fish fry next time I show up...:D

    Paul,
I love to read of your adventures. You took my buddy Destin on a little 'old car seeing' tour when he was down your way and still tells about it. Thanks for the words and pics.

And just before I left Dick said the words a guy like me wants to hear....
"would you be interested in a Mercury flathead V8 a buddy of mine a few blocks from here wants to sell?"
and just like that we were on our way to load it up as well....

I took my time going home and tried to stop and smell the roses so to speak and really enjoyed the spring time weather and the sight of full ponds, rivers and creeks with good water flow and even some springs flowing from farm pastures into ponds and so forth. It was very scenic....

Here is a cool old motel on Route 66 in Carthage, MO that I liked and looks to be still open for business...

I even drove by the Mo-Kan Speedway on my way home where the HAMB Drags are held and it looked like some event was going on and so I rolled down my window to smell the burning rubber...

  20. Paul, come back any time. I fired the engine Wednesday. I couldn't believe how easy it started. I take it to the muffler shop tommorrow. Here's what it looks like now.

Dick, the engine looks wonderful inside. I know you never opened it up but it was .040 over just as advertised...

I really like those air cleaners.

I wish my friend Paul would visit me with a pocket full of money and an empty truck. I have a 235 with his name on it. And something older.

  28. HRP-I was just too heavy or too short for my weight. The weight I was carrying I should have been about 6'8" instead of 5'9".
