We also spotted this old station in McLean. Actually, there were a number of old stations in McLean, obviously victims of the opening of the interstate when traffic no longer was routed through town.

    Another old station in McLean.

    As well as this one.

Sign that McLean once drew catered to interest in Route 66.

There are so many cool old buildings around that would be so cool to re-do. Plus I think business's would be better off in these because the curiosity of people to see the building would bring them in. Way cooler than all these generic looking strip malls and what now that litter our roads. VERY cool shots....

Traveling on to Shamrock, TX., when taking Route 66 through town, there's the old Tower station and U Drop Inn cafe.

The ststion was restored within the last few years back to it's original splendor.

The original plans for the station were drawn in the dirt with a nail.

You gotta love the name of the cafe! The U Drop Inn!

The station is now used as a visitors center.

It was exciting to have the chance to park the wagon under it's canopy for a photo!

In Shamrock, it was necessary for us to head south back home. However, our day wasn't complete. We still had a stop to make in Wellington, TX. for reasons you'll see later. But first, by making a loop around the courthouse square, we discovered the old Ritz Theater. Thankfully, it's still in use.

After leaving the theater, while driving on old streets layed with brick, we rounded the corner and saw this inside an old garage where someone was working on it. Of course, we had to stop! Glad we took the time!

Claimed he guessed he'd inherited the coupe. I'm sure there's was a story there somewhere.

Someone at the time thought that they had a hot rod in the old coupe as it still sported silver & black rolled interior.

And these old decals in the quarter window!

Funny thing about it is, other than the interior and the sealed beam conversion, everything else was bone stock! Some hot rod! But it hasn't been driven since 1966! Check out the tags!

    And the inspection sticker!

The gentleman let us roamaround in the place. In back I found this old refrigerator.

Seems that the old building used to be the local Chevrolet dealership up until about twenty years ago.

Still had a ghost sign over the garage door.

Speaking of ghost signs, this old Coca Cola sign was spotted on an old building elsewhere in the city.

What was to be out final stop of the day was visiting Owens Salvage in Wellingtin. "Flat top" Bob stayed past quiting time just to show us around since he knew that we were coming. This visit ranked right up there if Viva practically!

Here's a sampling of what Bob showed us in the salvage yard.

And then the real treat was when Bob took us in his man cave!

It seems that Bob's grandfather used to own the International Harvester dealership in Wellingtown. When the building burned to the ground a few years ago, Bob got the brick from the building and duplicated the facade of his grandfather's business in his man cave.

    I'm speechless!

That the same International Harvester sign that used to hang on his grandfather's shop more recently before the fire.

Then the time came to leave Bob's place and get ourselves on home. We still had a four hour drive ahead of us. Once we reached Childress and were back on Hwy. 287, we saw this old Spartan trailer turned into an RV.

It was while here in Childress that we started loosing sunlight on our final day.

The sky turned bright orange behind us as we headed for home.

Our trip was now only memories in the rear view mirror.

Once the sun set, a solitude overcame us. We were lost in our own thoughts. Rarely anything was said other than, "We gonna eat." I think we were both anxious to get back home yet saddened that the journey was soon to be over. In the darkness of night, while still on the road heading home, there's wasn't anything new to see. Nothing to distract us. No new adventure to seek out because of something that caught our attention. We had to get home.

Ten days on the road. Thankfully, ten trouble free days on the road. Regretfully, it was only ten.

    Thanks for coming along.

    Larry & Stevan,

Thanks again for sharing your trip with all of us. I looked forward to seeing what was new in your journey each day. You guys did a hell of a job on detailing your trip and loved the pictures as well as the history that went with each of your stops.

I actually travel on Hwy 66 everyday going in to work on my way into Tulsa and can't wait to to travel it one day start to finish.

I think I will save this as a road map of places to see west of Texas on old Route 66.

    Sad to see it end!

    Thanks again!!

Man, this thread should be a book (dead serious)....Bad ass pictures and a killer story. I would bet a publisher of auto related books would dig something like this. I know for a fact they would sell at least one copy......to ME !

    Hell, look into it !!!
