My schedule is for a stop at Flagstaff. We stayed in Gallup back in 2009 at the historic El Rancho Hotel but didn't venture out anywhere. I had heard that it was a high crime town even back then.
We also stayed in Flagstaff on that trip and I would like to go back to the Galaxy Diner. I have their menus(given to me by a staff member) in our 50's diner rumpus room at home. Will check out Little America and thanks for the recommendation. We will follow 66 as much as possible subject to road conditions.

Man, I just started school again or I'd be in on this!
What a beautiful car to travel in, and I cant say how many times I've wanted to ride shotgun in a RHD car and hold a dummy steering wheel to screw with peoples heads.
    Gonna be a bitchin trip!

Welcome back, and good hunting. That Hudson is beautiful.
Please keep a running numbers tally on how many call it a Merc? We'd all love to hear.

Do you need an International Drivers License as well?

Hopefully I will see you at Donut Derelicts. I really want to get a closer look at your ride.

  6. We went to Donut Derelicts last month...excellent pastry, coffee...and of course the cars. Be there early. We pulled in at 5:45am...lot was already 1/2 full and going strong. Great event...pretty much all wrapped up by 8:30-9:00 am so you can get on with your day.

I second the comment about the scenery in southern Utah (Escalante Staircase, Monument Valley, the Moki Dugway road (sp?), Bryce Canyon to name but a few.)...If you have time its worth driving through.

    Enjoy your trip.

  7. at exit 369 on I40 east at the eastern end of NM is Russell Ende's truck stop/diner auto museum. Museum is free and worth the hour stop to walk thru. Here is his website

We will be heading towards Kingman from Needles and on a previous trip I did the stretch (from East to West)
on the old road through Cool Springs and Oatman. My friend traveling with me hasn't done 66 before and I know the road is a bit rough and the Hudson sits low but can raise at the rear. It is only 1.5 hours and even if we take it slow might be a bit longer. I have seen the donkeys and the great musical memorabilia at Cool Springs but my musician friend would be interested. Is it worth the drive on that section or just go straight to Kingman.

Thanks Noel. Might see you before I go on 25th April. Greg has a coffee run on Sunday 8th April at Victoria Point Fountain Shopping Center. We stayed at Flagstaff back in 2009 and went to the Galaxy Diner. I scored some menus and other memorabilia(legit of course) that is in our 50's themed rumpus room.

I ran through Oatman a couple years ago and don't remember any really rough areas accept the parking lot behind town. You've been before, so its up to you whether its worth it. Some very nice scenery, buy you are going to be seeing a lot of that. The donkeys are really the big attraction on that route. The town itself, while cool, is mostly shopping. There is some interesting mining history though. Since you have been, try something else this time. I'd put that time aside for the Grand Canyon instead.

I was just in Oatman and well if you like Jass Onkies....the town is full of them and their poop.
Kingman has the old Powerhouse Museum/Visitor Center that has LOTS of Rt'66 stuff and if it was me, I'd rather spend my time there.
I am inclined to meet you at the NM border and run with you thru NM.
I sent you a PM. My buddy, Archie Lewis has a Car and Toy museum in Moriarty, he has over 450 cars that are in the correct era.
Russell's Travel Center is worth the stop and you already got that lead, just another thumbs up
I'd also say that Gallup is questionable but I have stayed at El Rancho and never had the car screwed with.
I wouldn't stay in Albuquerque I'd come East of there and stay with us at Zuzax on old Rt.66

There's quite a few motels there, mostly servicing the trucker folks that are driving through. It's a small, very old town and I would not have any concerns about spending the night there. FYI, the town is named "Needles" after the surrounding mountain peaks in the distance (pinnacles) that look like needles sticking straight up, if you squint really hard ...

Yes, you do have to stop at Archie's Museum in Moriarty. Be advised that will like not sell anything regardless of the offer. He is a great old guy and has a bunch of stories. Be sure to pet the dog, too.

So major changes here. The shipping company had scheduled the container to arrive in NZ from Brisbane. That ship then went onto China. Another ship comes in from Melbourne to NZ and USA bound stuff is unloaded from the first ship onto this one. All good so far!! However the shipping company failed to get it loaded onto the ship due on the same day that was going to land in Long Beach on 4/21. I was doing the tracking and on last Thursday afternoon I noticed a change that said it was now arriving on 4/28. WTF!! To compound this misery we had an extended long weekend with Easter break so NO contact with anyone. I am still not sure if the shippers would have found this if I had not been diligently checking the progress of the container. So this could have been really bad.

We have been working frantically to get things organised. I also discovered that the ship stops in Oakland 3 days before Long Beach so now the plan is that it will be unloaded there and unpacked and inspected by Customs if necessary. Hopefully that can be done quickly and efficiently and I might have the car later on Monday 4/30 or early Tuesday 5/1. Usually customs are bit easier in Oakland than Long Beach or so they say.

So I arrive in Oakland(luckily I hadn't booked any flights) on Sunday 29th ready for action on Monday 30th.
Then it looks like it will be a full on drive mainly on the interstates, down I-5,across to 395 at Bakersfield and then across to I-40. If I can get a few hours in on Monday that would be great and then I can get to Stray Kat 500 hopefully late Thursday if the gods are with me. From there normal scheduling will resume.

Now since my travelling companion dropped out(I will try once more tonight) i would love to find someone who wants to come from Oakland area or somewhere along the route I will be taking to attend the SK500. I am paying all fuel and accommodation but it is a share room basis( 2 beds so you are safe).
    PM me if interested.

  28. Ditto what someone said about your Hudson being the best on the planet.....absolutely gorgeous!
I'm in Amarillo, Tx. Probably on your route. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I've got a garage and tools you can use if needed, or I can put you in contact with some local repair shops that work on hot rods. I'll pm you my phone number. There is a great car museum here in Amarillo, Bill's Backyard Classics, if you have time. A few hundred upper end cars, mostly 50's and 60's muscle cars and street rods. Lots of GM stuff other than Chevy.
I have a friend here with two awesome Hamb friendly Kustoms that's planning on the Stray Kats trip, but I don't know what his schedule is. I'd probably go but my car is not Hamb friendly, and especially not Stray Kats friendly.
As someone mentioned, please post your itinerary as soon as you figure it out with your shipping problems.
