Hello everyone, Anyone with nailheads (especially Riv's) What exhaust are you running? 2 inch or 2-1/4, What mufflers and how do they sound? I'm lowering my Riv and the stock barrel muffler will hang to low. I was going to change the pipes to hug the frame but, I want a really good tone on this car. Tell me what you got and pic's if you have them. Thanks for any help, Dave
I ran 2 1/4" pipe with Turbo mufflers. It was deep, rich, and mellow, with plenty of ground clearance.
We put regular tailpipes and eliminated the crossflow on Cool57's Riv with 18" cheapie glasspacks under the rear framerails. Sounds awesome and is not the least bit obnoxious.
Thanks Ryan. I know you dropped your's 3 inches. Any issues or something you'ed do different? I'm ordering my springs today from coil spring specialties and I was thinking of having them made 10 percent stiffer. Your thoughts since your already low?
Yea, The stock muffers to quite but also is going to sit way to low once I drop it 3 inches. I just want to make sure a get a good tone and not an overly raspy tone
There is a clip of a Magna Flow muffler on a `64 Riv over on the ROA site , sounds pretty good. I am running a stock set up without resonators .In time, as money permits I will change out the muffler to the Magnaflow. No clearance issues with my bagged `64 so far.
Mine is also stock with all the factory bends to quiet it down. No resonators on mine either. I'll check it out. Thanks
OK Prd: I like the stock system, the two resonators and that big old muff behind the gas tank. These cars run fantastic when they have (A) good even compression and (B)they're quiet. I have had many 63, 64 and 65 Rivs through the years with good stock exhaust, with worn out stock exhaust and aftermarket. Just me now.....after I get in one that fits the A and B it's really nice driving. Not only is it quiet, I can't feel the shift points (not supposed to anyway) on the 63 Dynaflow and barely feel them on the Turbo-400's (64 and 65). There are a few other things besides that which put a smile on my face......never mind. Mitch
I got 2 in off manifold into 2 1/2 then into some redhots then kicks out in front of rear tires. Sounds great. Dont get sucked into the nostalgia of old name glasspacks. I listened to tons of soundbytes and mine sounds great.
I had glass packs that dumped out the side in front of the rear tires. I hated it. I had tail pipes ran out the ass end and still wasn't thrilled. After I dropped the car 3" the mufflers drug the ground from time to time. So I had a Magnaflow cross flow installed behind the differential in the stock location. I like ALOT better. anybody got a part# for that magnaflow?, what did you do for hangers? are you still using the stock type system with all the flanges?.....they do make it easy to work on things since you can just unbolt various sections
My old man took it to a shop in Westland Mi. All custom bent and hung tight to the frame with magnaflow glasspacks med length up front. Slash cut out the back. Nice job. 350 minis the mufflers I bought from summit. I'll have pics tomorrow Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
My exhaust is ported manifolds on the collector side 2 1/4'' out to 18'' glass packs turned opposite (perforated louvers) pointing toward outlet, into a camero style 2 in 2 out Flowmaster muffler angled behind the diff. Sounds real mellow but however not sure now with the new carb, intake & exhaust maifolds and cam that will be installed.
In in late 70's I had '69 Buick Wildcat, with a 430 V8 that I replaced the stock single exhaust system on, with a homemade 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust using a pair of 2 1/4 in & out Thrush "Hush Thrush" turbo mufflers (does anybody else remember those??). The Thrush turbo mufflers were compact and had a lot less back pressure than the stock Buick exhaust system and while the system wasn't excessively loud, I wasn't totally happy with the kind of flat and slightly raspy tone the car now had. (For a big, "large car" Buick 'cruiser', I wanted more of a mellow and "just slightly subdued and stealthy, iron fist in a velvet glove" sort of exhaust note, rather than a raspy "street rat" muscle car sound!) To improve the "sound quality" and get it more to my liking, I replaced a section of the tailpipes immediately aft of the mufflers and added a pair of 30-inch-long straight-through 'glasspacks' to act as resonators. After that, I thought the sound was pure "perfection"! If I was working on something similar today, I'd probably do about the same thing, except that I'd also probably add a crossover pipe ahead of the mufflers to decrease the back pressure a little bit more and to further "mellow" the exhaust note.
