I grew up in LA at the right time and went to all the usual spots and dragstrips. I was more drawn to stock type cars with carbs and gasoline but we were at the same tracks, just different parts of the pits. When the Surfers car started day or night you heard it and people moved to the fence. There was about to be a show.
R.I.P. Tom. The Surfers were definitely the greatest "low budget" top fuel team that ever raced. The simplicity with which they approached the sport and the inherent problems that arose were unparalleled. Their success was also unmatched. I'm so glad I was privileged to see them compete.
The series of videos that Tom Jobe did on the surfers is the most interesting thing I've ever watched on the internet. RIP Tom Jobe .
I got to know Tom through Bill Pitts' video series on the Surfers. Also saw him interviewed at Bakersfield ( believe). A brilliant mind and a humble, but humorous personality is what I saw. A one of a kind that will be sorely missed.
