  3. these are the only real rules for the Riddler;
    1. The vehicle must make its first public showing at the Detroit Autorama. Showing the vehicle at any indoor or outdoor show or any part of the entry, i.e. frame, engine or body, will make it ineligible for contention.
      Realizing that car owners and builders may need some form or exposure to develop interest or to gain sponsorship and give credit to suppliers and/or sponsors, magazine and video build-up coverage is allowed. No articles, video footage or stories with photos of the vehicle in finished form will be allowed until after the award has been presented, i.e. car cannot be painted or upholstered to be used in any media format.
    2. The vehicle must prove minimal operability. It must start, move forward and backward under its own power, turn left and right and stop using the brake pedal, before it is placed on the floor for display. Keep in mind that this is a minimum to qualify. Operational function ability is something the judges will look at.

    Now that's some funny shit!

  13. That car snunk up on all of us in 1986. Back then there was only the top 5 finalists, no Great 8 like today. The top 4 of us all knew who each other was and never really paid any mind to this race car which really unbeknownest to any of us was the 5th finalist. It was touted to have been built in 90 days. Nothing really special. Just a catalog built race car. No special paint, Lettering was nothing. In fact some of the chassis had been rattlecanned. The car sat in the display all weekend with the doghouse off, doors off and decklid proped up.

    I won first runnerup, the POS race car won the beans. We were all in shock. Couldn't believe it just won the Ridler.

    Later that spring the top cars in the division met at Belle Island for the program photo and ISCA Calendar shoot. Saw Dale Hunt's Grand Am all together. You could have mailed a FEDEX overnight envelope in the body gaps. Confirmed my suspicion that MHRA had their heads up their ass that year.

    Got home, licked my wounds, took a look at my Detroit Autorama shirt and guess who sponsored the event T-Shirts..... Dale Hunt's Mid America Speed Center. Didn't go back to Detroit as a participant for 22 years, then it was the basement.

    If you guys can't spell the name correctly you have no business talking about it, ESPECIALLY after someone already mentioned it in this thread yet you guys keep spelling it wrong. Is reading really that hard??:rolleyes:

    As a matter of fact, yes, sometimes it is really that hard. After spending 8 years building a car with out a professional shops help to compete I consider I do have a right and business talking about it....The award has gotten so far out of hand and out of reach for the common car guy. What a shame.[/QUOTE]

    any pics of your car!!!! I love this stuff.....

    Saying that the award is out of reach for the common person is a bit farfetched. From the first winner to the last it has always been and will only be for those with deeper pockets than others.
    Having said that i fully understand your gripe. Some of the previous recipients {the cars} just don't represent what automotive art should be, no disrespect to the owner/builder.

    about 1966!!!! Seriously!

  26. That was 23 years ago. No disrespect for Don RIDLER but since I never had the oppourtunity to meet him, the correct spelling of his name is not etched in my RAM or ROM.

    huh, google the answer or open a thread on the hamb to start shit....

    you obviously chose the latter.

  30. This show has always been for the common car guy. The place is filled with common car guys from the basement to the Ridler. I was at the first one and I was at the last one. I have had cars in it and I am as common as you can get.
    Let the guys with a few bucks play, they aren't hurting anybody. I love looking at the Ridler cars and true traditional cars, not the scruffy posers, but it is all relative.
