Added the red...probably should have been more patient.

Been venturing out more and more. Put about 20 miles on her this afternoon. Went to a buddy’s place while he changed the brakes on his sons truck. When I was about to leave it struck me that the ‘36 was parked with the perfect backdrop for a photo. My daughter was with me and wanted to be in the pic as well; she was beaming!!

50 DropTop. Love your coupe. Great job. I have loved driving mine for the last year since getting it on the road. I know you will as well. I think we live in the same general area. PM me

Been working the bugs out over the last few days. Found a big issue with the distributor. Crossed a set of RR tracks on Thursday and the car went ape shit...skipping, bucking, misfiring....I had my 9yo with me; she looked concerned. Nursed on to volleyball practice, same thing on the way home. Luckily, we were only a couple miles away so we were able to limp back home. After lots of “process of elimination” I pinpointed the issue this morning. Seems the screw that holds the vacuum advance on the helmet distributor was stripped. This seemed to allow breaker plate to bounce around a bit in the distributor causing the ignition issues. Was able to get a temporary fix in place and put some more miles on it today; about another 10. Experienced a similar issue this afternoon, not sure if my temporary fix was just that temporary or what. Nevertheless, I’ve reached out to Jim at Bubbas Ignition for some help.

If there’s a bright spot it’s that I’ve adjusted the brakes; it no longer pulls to the right.

The other good news is that the little flattie was running good before the dizzy took a shit. I was pleasantly surprised at the power it had pulling hills in 3rd gear. The throttle response was crisp and the acceleration was great. I’m hopeful a new helmet will solve the issues.

While I wait for the distributor, I decided to chase a unresponsive fuel gauge. Posted on the barn looking for help. Looks like the early mustang CVR is fried. Confirmed the fuel gauge will move, but always reads full regardless of the float position.

The new distributor from Bubba arrived today. Finally got home duties done and went to the shop late to do the swap. Fired her up just about a 1/2 hour later. She running like a top; still need to take her for a road test. I’m hoping the new CVR comes tomorrow so I can get the gauges back in. Next it’s off to upholstery.

Thank you! I’m quite pleased (and shocked) with just how well the paint polished up.

Today the Hot Rod Gods showed me some love. Took the coupe for a road test last night to test the new distributor. Everything seemed to be running good, maybe still a little rich and an intermittent skip here and there, but all was going well and much better than before. So with that success, I made the decision last night to take the coupe to work this morning; it’s only 6 miles or so, but it’s on the other side of town down a busy highway....would be the real first test (of my confidence).

    WHAT AN EPIC FAIL!!

Backed the coupe out of the garage this morning; fired right up. Let it sit in the driveway for a couple of minutes to warm up; all was well. Pulled out of the driveway and decided to take the more scenic route to work (less school traffic). Got the bottom of my road, made a right and it started misfiring and skipping again!! I couldn’t believe it. Turned off the road and decided to make the 1/2 mile journey back home. 15 minutes later I was finally in the garage. This thing was skipping so bad I thought I was going to have to tow it home.

Took a 1/2 day of vacation and was determined to diagnose this problem. Pulled the plugs; fouled. Cleaned all, checked gap and reinstalled. Thought maybe float level...pulled the top off the front carb (I could see a little gas seepage), float and gas level were spot on (I had already rejetted both 97s with 43 mains and 69 PV). Took the carb screen out of the 2nd carb and aha.....found the issue! The linkage connecting the two chokes together had the rear carb running 1/2 choke all the time. Removed the carb linkage and fired her back up. Cranked right up, pulled her out of the garage and she starts misfiring again. So, while she was trying to run, I pulled a farthest plug wire. Very weak spark...so weak I think I could have held the wire. Put the wire back and pulled the next closest wire...damn thing knocked the crap out of me!! Coil...it’s gotta be the coil. Pulled a NEW blue Bosch coil out, put it on....same thing. Finally I determined it was either points or condenser. Since I just installed the dizzy, I went went condenser. Went to the local O’Reillys and picked up a new condenser. Got her installed, adjusted the carbs and hit the road. Went all over this little town!! She was running so good and I was loving every minute!!

Excellent result. Bad condenser. Go buy another one, fit that and if it runs good put the one you have on now in the glove box as a known good spare.

Excellent idea...think I’ll put the extra coil in there as well.

Made a trip to check on the upholsterer. Door panels are in, tomorrow begins windlace and headliner.

Just found an issue with the rear glass. Ordered the glass back in 2017 from Macs. When it delivered, I opened everything up and checked to make sure nothing was cracked, broken, etc. I didn’t pay any attention to the fact the rear glass was not the correct shape.

Anyway, I spoke with the manufacturer and they’re going to provide a new rear glass using my original as a template. I’m hoping for a pretty quick turnaround time.

Thank you! Upholsterer finished today but it was too late to get some good photos.

@Chris 50 The interior turned out great. I’ll tag you when I get some good outdoor photos.

On the way back from the upholsterer, I snapped these photos of the gauges. After a 15 mile run at 60 mph, temp never topped 160F. Oil pressure ranged between 25-30 psi; both mechanical and original gauges were matching. Still need to work on the fuel gauge; I believe the cork float may be sunk.

I’m actually wondering if the temp is too low.....any thoughts?

Got an early start this morning and was able to get the top insert installed! Plan now is to finish polishing the front end and aim the headlights. With the days getting shorter I’m looking forward to more night driving.

Got the front end polished (as best I could) while still on the car. Also polished the headlight trim rings. Was able to make it to my first cruise in and caught up with another H.A.M.B. member, @36 Penny Coupe. Had a good time!

Today I turned my attention to the hood and grill. Installed the grill trim early this morning and began the polishing of the hood and side panels. Polished all the remaining stainless. Passenger side fitted and gaps adjusted; I think the fit is pretty good! Now onto to drivers side.

She now has her full hood. Still need to make some minor adjustments but the fit overall is pretty good considering I’m using a new Brassworks radiator.
