Technical Remove pulley from water pump

I got a mid ‘60’s Olds 400 engine & replacing the water pump & don’t see bolts holing pulley on it so guessing I need a puller? Tried tapping w rubber mallet no go. Thought the long bolts holding fan on were connecting but alum spacer for fan & pulley still stuck tight to pulley & pump?

 

I’ve had to remove the backs of other GM water pump and push the pulley, seal, and shaft thru the pump rotor out the front, Then remove the pulley from the shaft by pushing the shaft thru the pulley. I am not familiar with the Olds.
I have never been able to use a puller with one ever, even after making a split plate the bolted into the pulley. Good Luck.

 

I think you've already removed the attaching bolts, and the parts are just stuck together.
I can only suggest...
penetrating oil
vibration/shock
maybe a little heat
Don't hammer the pulley too badly.
Unless there's something different with the Olds.

 

If it had bolts holding the fan on, they also held on the pulley and spacer. But the pilot on the pump shaft, might be corroded and stuck in the spacer, and the pilot nub on the spacer might be corroded and stuck in the hole in the pulley.

I'd try soaking with penetrating oil, then support the pulley and use a hammer and drift to knock the spacer out (from the center).

 

Put some heat on the aluminum spacer, it's likely seized to the stub of the water pump shaft. Both the spacer and the pulley are held on by the long bolts, and thread into a hub pressed onto the pump shaft.

 

Aluminum and steel want to glue themselves to each other.

You might try convincing a sharp knife to go between the mating surfaces. Take care not to damage the aluminum spacer.

Hi all & thx, wacked a few times w a rubber mallet & came right off.
Question, I normally goop up the gasket surfaces w my choice of goop but the pump came off so clean including the gasket in tact w/o any kind of residual goop to remove so I’m thinking of going dry w a new gasket & just cleaning the already very clean mating surfaces as I didn’t have any leaks except around the bushing / bearing! Thoughts?

 

I use a sealer on water pump gaskets, but you can try it without, and see what happens.

 

I'd at leave cover the gasket with a little grease prior to assembly.

 

I think grease sounds good. I’ve used before, sealed up nice & easy take apart w/o the hardened goop mess!
