FYI -Garlits never claimed to invent the rear engine rail, he just perfected it. there were rear engine dragsters as far back as 1955-56 over here on the east coast.

Awesome pics, all of them. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Thanks for sharing the pictures. I found this site and not the "other one", so I say keep on postin........ I lost a lot of my old pictures in my divorce 30 years ago. Good to see these.

Anyone have a picture of the Boyd's Auto Machine AA/FD?

perhaps some of these are duplicates, but who cares? Personally, I LOVE THEM!

So why the drama? Is is because the "other thread" is so famous? Don't tell me it is because of space constraints...the "other thread" is famous for its number of posts, but many of them are single pics, and by the same guy. Is that call thread inflation?

If you are displeased, please ignore this thread and stick with the "other thread"

Bottom line, skip the drama and enjoy some awesome pics.

    I certainly am enjoying them.

I don't know what the beef is ? The pics in the 1st, 5th, 6th and 25th posts are all over the net. In fact a buddy of mine from Reno emailed the same ones to me a while back. The shots in that email included individual descriptions of the pics and credits. I still like seeing this stuff though. There are probably a lot of HAMB members that are seeing them for the first time, so it's all good... I'll just relax, have an adult beverage, and enjoy the show.

Haney, CW, and others, Thanks for posting these great vintage shots. Would it be possible to identify the not so obvious ones for us ? It seems that a lot of the racers are local heros or eastern racers that we don't know so well out west. I really dig the gassers, altereds and exibition cars. Anyone have any good E.J. Potter/Widow Maker shots/stories ? The guy had balls of steel !!! Thanks again, and keep 'em coming !

Right on Haney ! That's what I'm talkin' about... Tell us about Jewell, Sylvia and R.A. jr. Thanks in advance.

  16. My only E.J.Potter story happened here in OKC back in the 60's.......he was racing his Harley with the 327 turned sideways at Sand Valley Raceway in West Oklahoma City. His throttle stuck at around 150 mph and as he went through the sand traps, he stepped off to avoid the trees down by the river...................I believe the bike was in at least two peices and he was scuffed up, but came out rather well for tiptoeing through the pasture at 150. He earned the nickname "Michigan Mad Man".

Thanks Randaddy, I heard that the last strip exibition machine that he built was a three wheeler. It had a J-85 jet engine in it and ended up in a simular incident. Then I guess he went on to tractor pulling using larger jet/turbine engines.

Anyone have any info/pics on Keith or Ken Grondahl out of Caldwell, Idaho, they ran rails, altereds and a Norton drag bike in the 60s and 70s. I think the name of one of their Mustang altereds was Pure Hosstyle as in Hoss w/a ten gallon cowboy hat. I remember an Anglia too and maybe a Bantam. There were two local strips that I remember, Thunder Ridge Raceway and later Firebird Raceway at Star, Idaho near Boise. Kieth still lives in Idaho across the street from my Dad. I'll have to hit him up for some vintage shots and stories next time I'm up there for a visit. Ken passed last year, so I'm too late there. RIP

it's a model 1/25th scale plastic. i can't afford the 20 1-1 scale projects i have going on right now. don't need anymore.

  25. Somebody needs to colorize this shot, and make posters. I'd buy one for sure. Prolly the most famous picture in Drag Racing. There's another shot from a slightly different angle, taken a second or so from this shot by another photographer

At that moment in time your dad had to have been one of the more dejected people on this planet.
