I'm just getting started on my 57 Ranchero project that I've had tucked away for 20 years! It will be running a BBF with aluminum heads, c6, etc. I'm retaining the stock suspension with the Fatman dropped spindles and am looking for and easy rack and pinion setup for that. Any info would be appreciated.

A couple more. I call her "Two Face" for the time being because one side is patina'd and the other side is an off white primer color. Which will be changing in the near future and getting coated with a Matte White base, with a high-gloss Black and very heavy Red Metal Flake on the door pillars all the way to the roof

Hello,

We started building a SBC powered 1940 Willys Coupe. when we ran the 58 Impala in the weekly classes at Lion’s Dragstrip, we went against plenty of other 58 Impalas in the A/Stock class. But,there were some Ford sedans with centrifugal supercharged motors that gave us some competition.

By the time the fastest of the supercharged Fords came out, including Ranchero models, we had moved to the Willys Coupe build. So, by the time after the 40 Willys Coupe racing came to an end, we thought of getting a smaller pickup to try and continue our little speed shop business. It was build another hot rod pickup or get one already made with some go fast extras added in place. The Ranchero was the only one that had a McCullogh/Paxton centrifugal supercharger from the factory.

In the 1959 drag racing battles at dragstrips all over So Cal, Pete McCarroll was making records at one strip. But at other competitions, Les Ritchey with a similar Paxton/McCullough Supercharged 1957 Ranchero was also pushing the record books. Les Ritchey and the Performance Associate Shop were the ones to watch during this 1959 era in the Super Stock Class. They gave the 348/335 hp Impalas a run for the money.

My brother and I have always thought that by adding the McCullogh/Paxton supercharger would make any street driven hot rod plenty of power for just about anything. The thought of another street hot rod was going to have a McCullogh supercharger, whine and all, for power. (Despite the belt drive system.) Not many could run a 471 or 671 on the successfully on the street at the time and for a supercharged motor, the Paxton/McCullogh was the system to use.

We were totally impressed with the exploits of Junior Thompson and his McCullogh/Paxton supercharged B/Gas Studebaker sedan. Pure SBC, plus pure centrifugal supercharged power.

But, it started with the Ford factory and Studebaker factories including a centrifugal supercharger to slightly, stock motors to be able to enter into the factory stock car class at the local drags. Supercharger from the factory assembly lines? Who would have thought?

When we were sitting in a drive-in restaurant parking lot somewhere gabbing with other teens, anytime we heard the “whine” of a Paxton/McCullogh supercharger was always impressive. The distinct sound made our necks whip around immediately. It was definitely added power to most hot rod motors that could be used well on the daily driving chores of school and work. There was a black T-Bird that sometimes showed up cruising around the drive-in parking lot back then.

Did the two Paxton/McCullough Supercharged Rancheros ever meet? Still researching through the files for that answer. As much as we liked factory stock car races with evenly powered cars, we all anticipated the results of the top two Ford Ranchero competitors in the fast “F” stock class.

Normally, the centrifugal supercharged Ford motors were not as fast as the top 348 Chevy sedans. but, with a little tuning backup and plenty of drag racing experience, Pete Mc Carrol and Les Ritchey were the top competitors for the Ford builders and race fans.

So, the race where ever it was going to happen in the various So Cal drag strip locations was going to be the race of the year…

But, as disappointed.

When originally reading the Drag News byline under the photo of the 57 Ranchero, one thing popped out fast. A 321 cubic inch blown 57 Ford engine. Wow, no wonder people thought it was fast and challenged the fact. It was a misprint and should have read 312 cubic inch rated 300 h.p.

“Pete McCarroll after repeated protests was torn down under the watchful eye of J.C. Hart, found legal, and then proceeded to set a new class record at 108.51 with his 321 cu inch blown 1957 Ford Ranchero. Tuning chores for this super stock hauler are handled by L&M Automotive, Long Beach.”

These days, the closest we get to a Ranchero is in a nice t -shirt from Kustomrama:
