I have a 62 F-100 with a 223(mileage-master) straight six with a truck 4-speed. All original for the most part, its my daily. I've aquired a free 300-6. I know the bellhousing wont fit, but if I can find one, what am I up against. I'm sure sombody here has done this swap, just checkin if there's any (Oh-Shits) along the way, other than finding the bellhousing. Any help appreciated. Sorry no pic of the old turd, but it's a Porta-Pot Green short bed.

Free is free, but with the work it will take to fit the 300 in (new mounts, different tranny, exhaust, etc) I'd sell the 300 and get a v8.

If your 223 is sick swap it, but lots of effort for not too much gain. I've got a '62 f100 with the 223 and it's got plenty of pep for the truck. Best thing I've done recently was swapping the 3.73 to a 3.25 in the rear - now it's not wailing at 65.

I'm considering a v8 swap in mine, but its going to be something I can put an overdrive on.

Did the first truck 300 (1964) I think??? have a front mount or side mounts.? And use the bellhousing as a mount? I'm new to this old inline stuff, but I kinda like it.

Its not too sick the (223), but lookin for options. I dont need a speed-demon for a daily bash around truck. I've already swapped the 3.91 to a 2.73. that really slowed shit down. Just looking for dependable gas mileage with an old truck. I know a 300 will pull it up a hill way more better...

The 300 was used from late '67 up until the 80's. They were also found in the F600 / 750 big trucks. I drove a F700 wrecker with one in it. What a slug!

We had a port-o-pot green 66 F100 LWB with a 300. I want to say it had side mounts and rear trans mount but that was 35+ years ago. Finding a bell housing and top loader should be doable.
The 240 was available in F series in '63. The 300 came along in '65.
The 300 has all kinds of grunt but not much top end in stock form. There are lots of cheap and easy mods will wake it up.
    I'd want 3.50 or 3.70 gears for a DD.

It was a 1974 F700. I had a 4 speed with a 2 speed rear. I had to pull a 1982 C70 t-pole drilling rig out of a field and tow it 30 miles. What a ride took me 2 1/2 hours to make the trip. The front end bouncing all the way!!!
Strong ass motors and real stump pullers. But man the did not belong in big trucks like that.

Your spot on with the bell housing. He will need the big truck unit.

Best I can remember is they switched to side motor mounts/rear trans mount with the 240/300. I don't recall ever seeing a front mount 240/300.

The 223 was a good engine but the 300 is a totally different animal. IMO it would be a worthwhile swap. The 300 has allot more torque than a 302.

Yea the 300 is the big block of the 6 family. It and the 240.'The 140/170/200 were the small blocks. The 223 was to different animal.

Bell housing from any 240/300 F100 & up, or Econoline should work. A bell from a 240/300 or 302/351 out of a Galaxie should work too. There were some variations in the clutch fork so be sure to grab the one with the bell housing.

240/300 were the same. 250 was in the 144/170/200 family and not used in F series.

The 144-250 would NOT be a worthwhile swap. At least not in an Effie.

Go to The Ford Truck Enthusiasts (FTE) web site. They have a section devoted to this era F100 and that swap has been done plenty of times. Search their thread and you'll get what you need....

  14. No bell housing was ever made to bolt a 240/300 to your '62 T98 trans. Ford switched to the T18 trans in '65 when the 240 was introduced. You would have to switch to a later trans and make new mounts. Still a worthwhile swap IMO.....300 is a great motor.

Edit; bigger trucks did use the side mount bell in later years, but I don't believe they used the T98 trans......

Sorry, I missed the part about wanting to use his T98. Shouldn't be too hard to find a top loader to bolt up to the 300.

I had an 85 Bronco with a 300 6cyl and a 4 speed OD 4th trans. It was a stone on any hill had to downshift like crazy, swap to a V-8.

Many years ago I was a mechasnic in a Ford dealer. At some place and time I am pretty sure I have seen a front mounted 300 in some kind of truck.

This engine is one of the more durable Ford has ever made. They last a long time in trucks and among comparable alternatives the engine is one of the best options for industrial/stationary use. The engine also has enough reserve strength that(with appropriate parts) it's output can be safely increased quite a bit.

p-series vans from 65-77 with 300's used a front mount and a specific bell-housing that had the bosses for mid-mounts

I'm ok with building side mounts for a 300, but I thought my stock 4 speed would work with it. Guess I need to do some more research/and or scrounging. I had a 300 in a
4WD Ford that ran like a bastard and got 20+/- MPG. The little 223 gets weaker, maybe in my head , everyday.

There is a 262 that is the same basic engine as the 223. I have one in a '64 F100.

Look at some of the bigger trucks with a 300 as I think I seen them with a front mount and mounts on the bellhousing like your original motor.

If it were me, I'd put a M5OD behind it. They have a bit of a bad rep, but it's not deserved IMO. For a daily that sees occasional towing it's a good transmission. Deep first gear and an overdrive.

Anyone ever play around with the 262?

  24. I have one in my '62 F100.....great engines, more power than the 223. They are a one off engine though, no internals shared with the 223 and parts are getting hard to find.

302 bellhousings work on a 300 but the trans you want I dont know about. I did use a ford toploader 4 speed behind one with a 302 flywheel balanced with the 300 motor. We used to have a 300 HD 6 powered F600 bucket truck, the definition of under powered. Those engines do have forged cranks in them

Ford 300 came out in 1965 same year as the twin I beam a 300 has more torque than a 351 below 2500 rpm. I' d keep the carb off the 223 those old holleys are a better carb.
