Beautiful work, I see your bearing carrier is quite a bit bigger than a Parham. Do you get any side deflection support from the rear cover?

Anybody recognize this one. I don't think it's a Coleman.

There is a button mounted on the gear carrier to control end play.could very easily, when machining the rear cover have it fit close to the sides of the gear carrier.

I think they are Frankland, but I'm old and my memory might be tricking me. How about you Marty?

 

I have some frankland hubs too and they are clearly marked, and they certainly aint the same, but then again they may have changed designs too

Two more samples, The Franklands, that I have are clearly marked, The ribs on the other one are shorter than Shaggy's example. I have been told these are Halibrand, they are mag. The old Supermodified guys tell me as far as the in the drum brake era, the Franklands were the strongest on impact. Instead of squared ribs in the center, the rounded bulges were not as prone to fracture. Hubs in those days had a pretty short life span.

 

Marty, i believe those are cut down buick drums on those frankland hubs too, frankland drums have a lot more ribs,

Now for some extra info, on the backside of all the types of hubs im familliar with have a rib around the outside to locate the drum, exacly the same as the 38 ford brakes, so basicly a '38 drum will fit on these hubs or versa-visa, again they are all designed off of ford parts

I have no more information, but a couple of questions. The Roberts from Breckenridge MI, was that produced by John and George Roberts? Both ran super-modifieds for a while in the 50s and, after George was injured, John ran stock cars, mostly in Michigan. I thought the Roberts quick changes were a product of Lyle Roberts from Kalamazoo. He was a long-time builder of sprint cars and super-modifieds.

Inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.</CENTER>Johnny Roberts started racing in 1947. After seeing a sprint car race at the Saginaw Fairgrounds he knew he liked racecars and at the age of 16 he bought his first racer. This was a Model A Ford Roadster with a Willys 4 cylinder engine. Johnny recalls that he bought this car with the intention of being a car owner and hiring a driver. After towing his new prize to the racetrack and finding no drivers willing to run the car, Johnny assumed the driving job, too.
It took Johnny nearly two years to win his first feature, but after that initial win he quickly established himself as one of the premier drivers in the state. For the next ten years Roberts raced in all classes of cars with great success on all types of tracks in Michigan and other states in the Midwest.
Johnny’s driving talents were easily recognized wherever he raced and of equal significance were his mechanical and car building abilities.
In 1957 Roberts built and raced a radically different car in the modified class, which was the top group of cars run on a weekly basis throughout the Midwest. This car featured a cut down and narrowed Crosley body with a tiny cockpit. A Studebaker engine powered the car. The car’s appearance was as striking as it’s performance. Roberts seemingly won at will on short or long tracks, be they paved or dirt.
This car caused fervor in the racing community and was soon copied in varying degrees by many racers. This new group of cars were called super modified’’ and thus began one of the most popular classes of open wheel racecars to ever compete.
By this time Johnny was a regular competitor on the traveling sprint car circuits as well as in late model stock cars. He filled in any open dates with super modifieds.
In 1957 Roberts also began manufacturing a quick-change center section which he sold to other racers. By 1959 Johnny had an enviable career as a driver of great success and was definitely pointed towards big time racing on a national level.
However his career temporarily ground to a halt when Johnny was involved in an accident at the Ionia Fairgrounds that left him with a broken neck and serious internal injuries. This ended his racing for the balance of the year. Late in 1960 Johnny resumed racing in the super modified ranks.
During the early sixties Johnny continued racing super modifieds but started shifting his emphasis to the late models and soon was devoting most of his time to racing in this class. He was one of the first of the Michigan racers to run at the Daytona Super Speedway. In 1965 Johnny was involved in a horrifying crash at Daytona which was shown on national television. Fortunately, his injuries were not as serious as one would have imagined and by the following week Johnny drove himself back home to Breckenridge.
Although retired, Roberts occasionally gets behind the wheel of a stock car but spends most of his time helping his son prepare his late model racer."

Now the question is, " Did both Lyle and Jonny build Quick Changes?"

 

So whats the info on the Collier, ive never seen one, but apparently they were built in my area, btw it is spelled Lynnwood, WA. That isnt one of those driveshaft side mounted ones is it? a couple old local racers metioned they were running one like that built by some local guy

 

Wrong again! It is a Coleman.

Do you have side bells for it? Some have bolt on tubes.

 

I don't know for sure. I gave some information coming about the Collier and I believe the gentleman sending it mentioned that it was a front change. Can anyone confirm this?

One more for the list: The (Vic) Rhyne-(Joe) Walls Q.C. made in Muncie Indiana in about 1950. Not sure how many were built but would guess 12-20. Joe Walls was a pioneer car builder/owner in the old Mutual Racing Association (Roaring Roadsters) and an expert machinest. The two collaborated on the design/build of a beautiful piece that was distinctive due to its radially finned side covers. Even at that early point, the rearend was an open tube axle style (no axle housings) with outboard bearings (like birdcages). Joe made the patterns-center section with a reinforcing rib running from middle of cover over the top to the lower shaft housing; the rear cover; and the side covers. Castings were poured in a local foundry and Joe machined everthing in his garage/shop.

Here are the pictures of my old 'Bart' unit I promised months ago, I finally got a good scanner!

 

Can anyone fill in any blanks here. I'm still chugging along on my book, but have been working on technical stuff. I know this list will never be DONE, but would like to make it as complete as possible before it goes to print.

There was an older man in Kodak, TN that made a knock off QC rear axle that used steel tubes and used GM rear brakes. I wanted one for my V8 Dakota. I think the name he went by was Precision Gear? I know for a fact he was at least making them in 1999.

The guy had his stuff locally sand casted somewhere near Romines auto parts/fabulous junk yard. Romines had a couple of old old school Skeeter race cars. I made good acquaintance with him and we rode up together to see the castings. This has been 20 years ago. Anyway, if I remember correctly, he was a machinist at Y12, the nuclear facility before he retired. I vaguely recall that the shop was off of or on Dumplin Valley Road. There still is a neat dirt karting track right there on that road. I recall that it was near there. Again this has been 20-24 years ago and he was about 75 then. He looked a bit like Roy Orbison to me which always struck me kind of funny. I'll ask my dad to see if he recalls his name. He also made a few flathead parts. Somebody here knows this guy. I'm still blown away at the members and the knowledge on this site. I met him at the Chillhowee car show. He always had some rear ends there trying to pedal them to the street rodders. That's all
I can tell you. Somebody here has to know him.

Anybody know about the last one I posted?

 

I just saw one last week in a midget. I was told it was either a Casale or a Progresive.

Actually, there were two midgets there and one had one and one had the other and now I'm not sure which was which.

 

Len Low of San Leandro, Ca. early to mid 1950's. There is a semi famous Hisso drag car, looks like a off set roadster that orignally had a Low QC. He moved to Sparks Nevada to build Lion Liftall forklifts later in life. Passed away a couple months ago.
