I've never pinstriped before, but I want to paint my (metal) mailbox in a hot rod theme - I'm thinking one big red scallop and an old-time font for the name and street number. I have the font picked out and the design laid out, but I'm unsure about the paint to use to make it look as old-timey as possible. Would one-shot hold up under the elements? Can I clearcoat it? Or should I consider using another type of paint? thanks, dan
It's fine to hold up against the element's. Clear is ok, your style of line will give the old time feel. If you wish to 'patina' your work you may, though it is becoming quite over-done as of late.
1-Shot will stand up fine outside, some colors like Red, Maroon, and Purple may fade from UV exposure. Clear isn't really necessary. The old timey look can be influenced by color selection. Use Grey or Ivory instead of White, etc. Font selection can help or hurt your project. ------- Slammed is correct, the fake patina look is way too common now.
Crackle Varnish is another option, for artificial aging, instead of the common scuffing method most people use. Then wipe a dark glaze over the crackles to create depth.
great advice. thanks guys. I'm planning to replicate the hand-painted lettering that early lakes racers used to promote their businesses, though in a scale that fits on the side of a mialbox. Like I said, I believe I found a font that looks a lot like that style. It's a black metal mailbox - the typical Home Depot $10 job - so I plan on doing it in ivory or some sort of off-white. red scallop. Next n00b question - where can I buy said paint? thanks, dan
