Question - Why rear wheels hard to spin ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fordstandard, Aug 14, 2013.

  1. Rear is from a 66 Mustang with Posi.

    * Question ; In the shop , car is on a lift, frame jacked up; What could cause the rear wheels to be hard to spin?

Emergency brake is off --rear brakes backed off a bit

If its an automatic somebody might have over tightened the bands in it to make it shift harder. If they over do it,it has the same effect as applying the parking brake.

Disconnect the driveshaft and see if it is still stiff. If so then it could very well be that the posi is too tight, causing drag in the system. Also if the carrier has too much side bearing load the bearings will be tight. How does the diff feel when turning from the pinion end? Good luck and let us know what you find.

Why would the posi have anything to do with it, if both wheels are turning (and they should)?

Are the brakes adjusted correctly, could be drag from the shoes?

A ford clutch type posi rebuilt should take 500 ft lb two slip one wheel your problem might be normal.

Clarification - frame jacked up meaning both wheels off the ground. Transmission in neutral, right?

Rotate a wheel, the wheel on the opposite side spins the same direction, the driveshaft turns. There's going to be a moderate amount of drag in all the bearings, seals, and gears you're turning to do that.

The question is how much is too much and if too much where's it coming from? Is it a consistent drag or is it intermittent like a warped drum or bent axle shaft/flange causing brake drag?

Drum brakes? Pull the wheels, pull the drums, put a wheel back on and try again, see how much it changes.

Unbolt the rear of the driveshaft. Once you're down to just the rearend without drums or driveshaft it should turn very freely.
