I have been thinking of writing up a post about Tommy Lee & his connection with the SCTA. I did a search but only turned up odd posts on him. Has this already been covered ? Just thought I would ask before jumping the gun. Thanks.
I grew up listening to Motley, and still do, but DAMN! That fool is so hopped up on that crack cocaine, he doesn't need a car to set a speed record
Hey, Besides the radio stations, and the Cadillac dealer, what else did Tommy's dad own that made the purchase of all of Tommy's cars possible? And didn't Tommy off himself by jumping of one of his dad's buildings? Swankey Devils C.C. "Spending A Nation Into Generational Debt Is Not An Act Of Compassion!"
Umm, I think he is talking about a different Tommy Lee guys, a member of the Road Runners circa, 1945. Not the talent less skank rooting hack of fame today. Doc.
His history has been covered in a variety of books and was detailed in an old issue of Automobile Quarterly. The AQ issue is pretty easy and cheap to find compared to the other books that mention him in real detail (The Simon Moore Alfa books, etc.) Sad, weird story. Too much money plus not much self control mixed in with a unhealthy dose of mental illness meant a short trip out of building at too young of an age...great taste in cars, though. Cris
get to it mike he had some fantastic cars i'd like to see more of them.Thank god for the mad men they give us sane ones something to aspire to!
One of the coolest looking cars ever built! http://www.oldcarsweekly.com/article/A_different_kind_of_hot_rod/ http://www.americansportscars.com/lee.html
Very cool story...If Tommy Lee beat Bob Estes, he beat one of the best...I think it was in either in one of Don Montgomery's books or Dean Batchelor's book about Bob Estes and his hopped-up T roadster beating Clark Gable's Packard in an impromptu street race in the late '30s. Saw Tommy Lee's car in several of Don's books but never knew the story behind him...thanks for posting.
Hey, Can anyone confirm a connection between Don Lee (Tommy's Dad) Harley Earl (of General Motors fame) and Tommy? Earl was rumored to have gotten his start @ Don Lee Cadillac in Los Angeles, but was there any direct connection from Earl to Tommy and his vehicles? Swankey Devils C.C. Well, I saw all of those car at the lakes in 40-41 and I can truthfully say I was envious as hell, nice cars and beautifull women. He was there with the Offy, the Alfa, the Talbot Lago, 3 v16 Cadillac sedans and lovely women. I , of course being about 17 years old, had absolutely nothing to do with him! There was always a question as to whether he jumped or not, at least in my memory! I did get to see the Mercedes, after the war at his garage and what impressed me what that none of the weld were dressed, Never heard it run but it still was one of the cars of my dreams. traderjack
Whilst looking for more information on Tommy Lee I came across this picture of Herb Day & his Mercedes at Muroc. Can anyone tell me anything about this car ? Thanks.
IMO $440K is not a bad price for such a fabulous one off vintage sports car of that quality and pedigree. Especially when you consider the price of some high-end modern "mass produced" sports cars are often around $1Mill+. I know which I'd prefer!
