I hadn't asked a dumb question in a while. During a recent reliability run, I was wondering why the Pharaoh's Mercury didn't have wide whites? Things that go through your mind while you are on the road. Lol!

Maybe they couldn’t afford them? :D

  3. Had they wanted wide whites they would have visited Midnight Auto Supply....

I had thought that but I agree with @ThisOneGoesTo11 They would have stole them.

  5. I would guess more to do with the time it was filmed ('73).
    That and being hastily done...

I wonder why they didn't at least put blocks on it.

Maybe they spent all of the money that they got from the pinball machines on gum and cigarettes.

No budget, cars sourced and thrown together in a short time frame. Any maybe, just maybe because Lucas didn't want them in his vision of 62?

I think that white wall would have been too chic for a car of thugs!

My guess is that they mainly intended the car for up close shots. I have heard a lot of negative things about it's construction. I would venture to say that it was a purpose built car thrown together without a lot of concern about accuracy. It should have had skirts also.

It’s not as nice as the Rebel without a cause Mercury in my opinion. That seems period correct to me.

I always believe cars many times lean more Hotrod or more Custom and since this Gal had the skirts off she was out lookin' for street trouble as a rebel...

Many are anti WW to boot and that's why some cars many times don't have them regardless...even if they may well suit it...that's my thoughts...

I agree with Roothawg's closeup shots comment. Note the white fur was on the Merc interior, it showed in the shot of Kurt I think.

My guess is Lucas made the film appeal to both us motorheads, but also to the larger public that likes relationships between characters. So more emphasis on shots about the actors.
