Question about 5x5.5 wheel sizes?

I have a friend that is looking for a set of steel 15x5 w/5 1/2 bolt circle?

What years and cars came with those wheels?

I'm thinking Ford/Mercury/Lincoln but I don't know what years?

 

Ford to '48

Merc/Lincoln till the early 60's

Ford light trucks still do as far as I know.

I think International truck used that bolt circle on some of their trucks as well.

Not sure on the 5" width for those years.

 

Early F-1's too I beleive.....

 

Some early 50's Chrysler's up to 55, as I recall

 

Also, F-150's thru at least 1997

 

1/2 ton Ford trucks thru 96....I've got a pair of 6's Mark.....

Looking for a pair of 15x5's that accept the small caps for the front of a 34 coupe...

Not so. He said 15's. Ford to 48 were only 16". Mercury in 47-48 were 15".

 

Those are the only ones that take the early hubcap?

 

WheelKid has a Tech article somewhere on this forum that covers the FoMoCo wheels from end of wires up into the 50s. This includes diameters, bolt #/circle, and widths.

 

Some corrections are in order here..................

Merc only thru '51........then 4.5" BC thru '54...then 5" '55 thru 60

Uncertain about Lincoln after '51......but was 5.5" BC thru '51

International trucks were 4.5" BC but the wheel LOOKS like '40 thru '48 Ford and accepts the Ford hubcaps.

I beg to differ, I ran 1959 14" Mercury Turnpike Cruiser wheels on a '53 Effie that were 5 0n 5.5 bc.

 

There is another 15" rim other than Ford for the 40-56 Ford truck hubcaps. The fronts are 15x 5.5 but have metal spring clips that hold the hub caps on like Chevy's but I'm not certain of the width or what they came on. These flippers have F100 hub cap bases welded to the inside. The 57 up 15" truck wheels have the outside nubs and the 56 hub cap won't work.

49-51 Mercury won't take the Ford hub cap either.

 

Aren't later model Dodge 1/2 tons 5 x 5-1/2" BC?

I don't think the Dodge wheels accept the small caps.

 

The 49-50 merc are 15 X 5.5 with the outer nubs, I just picked up this pair which are stamped 49 (rear of car)

 

My '77 F100 came with 5 on 5 1/2 wheels and dog dish hub caps

 

But aren't they 6 inches wide?

Looking for 5" or possibly 4 1/2"

 

The later truck rims has the straight across air vents where the old rims have a nice cresent shape to the vents. I know it's personal preference but the ones just look like truck rims.

 

I have recently been afflicted with somewhat of a wheel fetish, and I have several of the earlier 15X5 Mercury wheels, and the early 15x5 F100 wheels. Both of these wheels look like the 40-48 16" Ford wheels, and have the inside nubs for the small cap. The only difference I can see is that on the Mercury wheels , the lugnut hole chamfer is "flat", and on the F100 wheel, the lugnut hole chamfer has a raised lip. I believe this is the difference between car & truck 16" wheels as well. I also have 1 oddball that is the same style, but is 5.5" wide and completely solid. I have no idea what it's off of. I'll grab some pics the next time I am at the shop. If someone is interested in some of these, I do have some extras...

don't wish to get into a pixxing contest here...........but I have two 9" "Ford" rear ends..........one I removed from a '57 Mercury myself and another I bought from under a '58 Edsel Corsair or Citation, and they are both 5" bolt circle rear ends, as are the '55 & '56 Mercury. Edsels, in particular, came with either 4.5" BC (Ford based Ranger & Pacer) or 5" BC (Mercury based Corsair & Citation) Now maybe, just maybe, the '59 changed to 5.5" BC........but I doubt it and would suggest memory sometimes isn't completely reliable. Ford used the 5" BC on numerous Ford, Mercury & Lincoln passenger models thru the 70's, even though they also used the 4.5" on other cars and the 5.5" on trucks.

The only 14" wheels with 5.5" BC I know of, which isn't necessarily the entire story, is the '57/'58 Imperials.

My 59 and 60 lincolns used 5x5.5x14s never seen or owned a 52-54 merc that wasnt 5x4.5 or 55-60 5x5

 

Have a look at 90's GMC trackers - those little 4X4's. I believe they have this bolt pattern, and would have fairly narrow wheels. Only problem is that they may not have a lip that allows running a hubcap - the chrome ones I know are the flush front style of rim

 

Are you looking for 5 on 5.5" or 5 on 5"? Jeeps from 41-85 used the 5.5 pattern in various widths. I think Ive got a set of wheels from my jeepster that are that pattern and 15x5-5.5 wide. No ones uses them, and most will give them away.

 

I had a set of Jeep wheels but I can't recall if the small caps would fit them...

 

Want some trivia? 57 Lincolns are the only 14 inch 5x5 1/2 Ford ever produced.

 

I dont know what size "small caps" are, but they hold a stock jeep baby moon style cap. The stock cap is around 6-7 inches, but Im guessing. If you really need to know I can dig one up and measure. I do have 8 of these wheels at my dads place, unless he got rid of them.
