I have seen purple used quite frequently on rods and customs. I have looked through many 50s and 60s car magazines, problem is their mostly B&W. I'm more familiar with the 70s when anything went, as this is when i got into cars. Just wondering if anybody has insight of how popular purple was back then.

As far as I remember, and being a 60's kid...purple has always been around on cars.

Check out the thread about Larry Watson. He loved purple...his famous quote as to why he painted his cars purple? Chicks dig purple. They still do...

Purple is the bomb. Only color I would ever consider painting my car if I was going with another color.

  12. Back in 1963, the son of my Mom's boss had a '32 Ford channeled coupe. It was painted purple and he called it the Purple People Eater. So yes, purple was popular back then.

Joe Nitti's roadster was sporting purple way back in 1950.

Eddy Dye's roadster was built by the Ayala Bros. in 1951, featuring a custom-mixed purple hue they called "Cherry Orchid".

  16. Purple was popular in the mid 50s to early 60s in cars as well as local culture, evidenced by the Detroit gang “the purple gang”.
It made a comeback in the early 70s with the Chrysler color plumb crazy on the charger/ cuda. Hope i got that correct.

  18. Barris painted a bunch of Customs deep purple. Not a lot of colour pictures of them around but a couple of restorations and a couple of colourised pics by Rik Hoving of Barris Customs that were purple in the 50's.

My wife is an artist and she will tell you that Purple is one of the hardest colors to get right.
When I was a young car guy we called it "Burple" in the paint shops. Kind of a mix between dark blue and purple.
Been around for ever. Elvis had a 56( I think) Caddy Convert panted that color. The legend is he took the car to a local shop in Memphis along with a bunch of Concord grapes. Squished the grapes on the front fender and told the painter to match that color. So maybe it should be called "Graple".LOL
Don't know if it's a true story or not. It should be......
    Big daddy dug it.

Purple seems to have a pretty good grapple on both Hotrod and Custom and Certainly Stands Tall doing it...Do It!

I’m one who doesn’t like purple at all.

I’ll walk past purple cars and not give them a second look.

And I also don’t like Red, especially red interiors.

One of the first hot rods I remember was a purple 33/4 full fendered coupe that one of the members drove to Order of the Arrow meetings in Ventura in the early 60's.

IIRC the color was inspired by a royal triton oil can
