Project 29 Tudor in Mass.

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Mikel50, Apr 17, 2015.

  1. Not a pro , but try welding the thin stuff off the table . I practice wth two pieces bent up like a Z , and put the two top piece togeather with a tight butt fit , tack and use a .035 mig wire for filler . Much less grinding . The metal up off the table is what you will have when doing panels . I Se my welder at 40 amps and walk the petal . Good luck and like said above practice everyday .

    Thank you !
    That’s exactly what I did.
    Well almost ...
trying to recreate sheetmetal on the car
I used my sheet metal clamps and propped the pieces off the table. Tacked the ends and removed the clamps and put 4 on the corners to hold it off the table.
I started figured out to pulse the pedal on my own. It worked great.
Only thing I didn’t do was use the mig wire.
    I forgot that trick

For my set up I was using

    1/16 gold tungsten
    1/16 filler rod er70s-2
    #8 gas lens
    Machine at 30 amps

  3. Thinner mig wire will make a large difference . Looks good .

Your TIG welds are looking good, particularly for self teaching on that Eastwood pedal. You will be stacking dimes before you know it.

    Thanks Pat.
I’ve got no issues with the pedal... I’m a happy guy at the moment.
Glad I stuck with it ... I’m not one to give up too easily.
I taught myself everything else up til now ... not about to stop with the Tig.

I honestly don’t know. I’m just getting started.
I have never heard of that, but I really don’t know. I’m not knowledgeable on the different types.

Painting in the summer, hot rods in the winter? Sounds like a plan. It's getting closer and closer, Mr Mike.

WOW, I've caught up, finally! Been parts of three days reading thru all of this build. Now I'm pissed, why? Because I can't do that stuff as easy as Mike does. haahaa. I can't wait to get back on my Essex project. How do I subscribe to this build please, someone? Perley

I’m sorry it’s such a long build thread ... I feel it may be somewhat redundant at the beginning, but picked up speed once things got rolling.

Thank you for following along and the kind words.

I feel like you should be rewarded for your 3 days of catching up. Haha.

Love to see the Essex, maybe a build thread ?

If I can do this stuff , you can do it !

You should post a tech thread just about how you pulled that off!

I didn’t register the car today. I just wanted to get it in my own name. Which I was successful at doing.
I told the lady I had 2 other cars to title also. She said come see me if you have any problems.
Her father was a “collector” just like my grandfather is
    Sweet ol lady that Peggy.

Don't float TMI around on here, gents. This shits on a need to know basis. Loose lips sink ships.
If you don't register it , you won't have to pay excise tax right away. Getting the title is the big one! AND paying SALES tax! I didn't do it right away on my first coupe (till I had it built ) and got slammed with penalties. (I didn't get a title with it and waited- not good)
Pretty soon you'll get all the Junior Highway Patrol guys telling how you SHOULD have done it! Lol

I wish I was able to wrap my head around it sooner. Timing wasn’t right I suppose.
    Today was a good day.

Thank you for the advice along with several other guys.
    Made all the difference

    Let’s build hotrods

  30. Mike, another member suggested in another thread looking at this training video that is updated weekly with welding tips. It looked worth while so I am passing it along fwiw
