I bet that 500 years from now this picture of the Pete Henderson Roadster will be found under the definition of "Hot Rod" in Webster's Dictionary.

Post the pic that you think should be there!

Some of rodding's biggest names Don Blair, Vic Edelbrock, Manny Ayulo, Jack McGrath, Ralph Guldahl, Art Chrisman, and almost Tom McMullen have helped shape this roadster's past. But it's lasting identity as the Pete Henderson roadster was secured the moment a horse got involved.

PS This pic of the Roadster on Daytona Beach was taken after a concourse restoration was completed by the cars saviour and then owner Chuck Longley. This the cover of the 15th anniversary volume of the Rodder's Journal. This is a best-of-best volume filled with the editors' picks from the past 15 years--you gotta spend a few hours with this one![IMG]

Here's a picture of Chuck Longley with the car when it was shown at Pebble Beach in 2007

Hard to disagree with your statement. The car is a perfect representative of the early era. An old friend of mine sold the car to the Longley's and they recreated the Henderson version. Hope others post their choices.

if I were going to pick a car for the definitive HOT ROD it would have to be an "A V8" hiboy roadster. not any particular car... there is a bunch out there...

Being partial to '32 5w's I find it easy to agree with HOTRD32.

I'm in partial agreement. To me, the quintessential hot rod is a '28-'29 roadster on Deuce rails with a '48 Merc V8, '39 Ford trans, a '40 banjo, '40 brakes, and a Mor Drop axle.

Guess I'll crush the bandwidth and say this is definately a nice car, HOWEVER, I think the representative should be a roadster. Like Isky's T.

Early fenderless highboy roadster. That's what the term "hot rod" originally referred to.

Take a look at the thread entitled, "1940's period-correct hot rods." Almost every car there is a definition of the term.

Roger that. The highboy roadster before a coupe. Top off cruzing on the boulevard on Friday night.

My opinion may be slanted toward a California Friday night though.:D

It did, or at least helped along with Mustangs, etc. It was the point in time when it changed from the only option for having a 'hot rod' was making one to just going down to the dealership and buying one. Not that that was necessarily a bad development as it wasn't, it was a great development, but that is what the first GTO's represent and what distinguishes a traditional hot rod from a muscle car, street rod, or modern hot rod if you want to call them that. Sort of before GTO (BGTO) and after GTO (AGTO). And I suspect, that and the Mustang is why 1964 is the hamb cut off year.

Many definitions, it really will be up to the people at Webster Dictionary, what fires their rockets.

    About like this:

Hot rods have come before and since, and there are many variations I like just as well, but that's what's in my head when someone utters the term "hot rod" without elaboration.
