Technical Possible to fit 1934 shifter into post-34 trans?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Michigander, Mar 5, 2014.

  1. I asked at the Barn too...

I haven't studied the possibility, but maybe someone has tried it. I have a really nice chrome 1934 Ford shifter stick that I would like to use on a '39 trans. Of coarse, the lower end is too short from the pivot ball to the lowest point. Short of cutting and spicing the sticks (above the pivot), can the pivot ball on the '34 be moved up (if its pressed on)? I don't know if it would work, maybe the stick curve starts too close to the ball to do this. Maybe this would put the 'nub' on the side in the wrong place; don't really know.

Anyone have a spare 'swan' 35-39 shifter stick???
    Just thinking...

This will not work...too many different dimensions are different between the two styles. Sell or trade your lever for a 40-52 pickup 3 speed lever. It's the closest in appearance to your 34 lever and has the correct bottom end.

  3. Thanks, I've located a 38-39 swan neck stick. The '34 stick was also 'swan' shaped, a straight pickup one would possibly hit the dash. The 35-37 car sticks are slightly curved and should have also worked.
