I have a question for the Pontiac guys! Will the 60-62 dog dish/poverty hub caps fit on the 55-56 15 inch wheels? [IMG]

From the picture online the centers look very similar to my 14 inch wheels on my 60 and this way I wouldn’t be restricted to narrow 14 inch tires?
By chance does any of the Tri5 Pontiac guys know? Thanks in advance.
    Scott

Sure will. Any Pontiac cap from as far back as '40 to as late as '66 will fit. Same with Olds up to '58

You will need the clips that go in the slots to hold the cap on.

Only issue w the 55-56 rims is that they are only 5 1/2 inches wide. Little less than the recommended for most tires you would probably want to use. The 60-62 14 inch rims are 6 inches wide. Not the best either as they're right on the minimum for say 225-70r14 for example.

Btw, the 60 poverty cap is a one year only style.

Once I get a set I was planning to have them widened and reversed. Then again I’ve run 235/ 75’s on my reveres 55 Chevy wheels and they do okay. Not ideal but okay. But I would have them reversed.

Good to know. I thought they were the same 60 - 62. Or at least I’ve seen them listed that way. It gets tricky looking for stuff online for a 1960 because the search engine likes to default to 1960’s and then you get a little of everything.

Go on ebay and search for Pontiac dog dish or poverty hubcaps and you should be able to find at least a couple examples of the 60 caps.

If you go the route of the caps which require the clips on the wheel centers, look for some used original ones. The only repro ones I'm aware of were made by Fusic (Olds parts supplier). Don't know if they still offer them but they had a reputation of cracking ( supposedly made of the wrong material....too brittle). JMO.

I annealed my cattle gate so it could be welded, as the thinwall tubing was 'hi-tensile'.
Once properly 'warmed', it was weldable. (oxy-acet)
Sounds like the clip mfr. discovered this same material...

Those have to be just about as rare as rooster teeth. I worked in a Pontiac dealership in the 70's as a front end alignment mechanic and don't remember seeing a big Pontiac with Poverty caps on it. 60's were on the old side as far as take it to the dealer for service in central Texas then.
Remembering that in 1968 the Oldsmobile salesman That special ordered my 69 Cutlass for me when I sent my dad the list of items I wanted on it had a fit that I didn't order white walls and full hub caps and was still wanting me to have chrome fender well trim put on it when I picked it up. That was the plainest looking 69 Cutlass that Williams and Swanson sold that year.

Remember when the yards made fences welded up from their unsellable wheels ? We'd hit the yards in little towns & pick them out of the fence like picking green beans, one of us to squeeze them just enough to release the clip & drive them out, the other catching them in a coffee can. They'd either laugh & give them to you, or charge you $5 for the can.
And don't forget some of the Olds used them until '58. I've seem a lot of cheap Buick wheels that had them, probably by dealers. Old wheel piles are nearly extinct.
