I need to find out what auto transmission options I have on a Pontiac 389 motor. I am not sure what the bellhousing pattern is. Is it standard G.M., or is it on its own? I have to replace the trans but don't know what to look for. Thanks for any help.

Also depends on what year 389. Early one had the starter mounted to the bell housing. Mine is a '63, so I used a wilcap adapter to mount a 350th.

  4. Your answer depends on the year of your block. 389s used 3 different bellhousing bolt patterns.

If yours is the later 64-66 389s, they use the 'modern' pattern and 300/350 and 400 Pontiac trans fit. A simple adaptor and you can use a 700 like I do.
