So my car club http://www.fordexp.com has been tossing around the dea of a Route 66 road trip on the Ford EXP and Mercury LN7's 30th anniversary in 2012, starting in Chicago and running hopefully all the way to LA.

If the other members actually do this or not doesn't really enter into it, because my dad and I have always wanted to do this trip and we figured why not!

What I need to know is there anything about the states we will pass through that I might need to know?

I have been through most of the northern states but not most of the ones the Mother Road passes through.

We will be driving my 1982 Mercury LN7 and here are my concerns:

Will the Police give me trouble for my tail lights because they are black even though that is stock?

Am I exempt from California emissions testing being as I am from another country?

Will a lack of a front license plate cause me issues? We are not even issued them in Alberta anymore. (also a lot of people see the Alberta plate and assume it actually says Alabama lol)

Also does anyone who has done this trip have any suggestions for me?

    I forgot those even existed.

You will see plenty of good Rt.66 stuff from Amarillo through New Mexico for sure, lots of stuff off of Rt.60 and I-40 to see.

Your car issues are imaginary, don' sweat any of that, you only need emissions testing if you are moving to the US which I doubt you are.

If you look close you will see that I have 7 of them, it's fun when people ask me "What the hell is that?"

I figured they might be, but I was getting some really conflicting info from some of my American friends and though it couldn't hurt to ask here.

    What do you mean?

Do a search and I am sure you will find lots of previous posts on Route 66.

We did the full deal last year(had done a smaller stretch in 1995).Get the books and maps to help you and stick to the old road as much as possible.
That is where you see the old stuff and meet the best people.
I could go for pages on the fun we had.Took 2 weeks and that really wasn't enough time.

I am really really looking forward to this, and regardless if the rest of my club is involved or not I have to make this trip, been having health issues and i want to do this epic journey before it's not possible.

  7. Ok, great idea, have fun, but there's something about the cars in question that are about as OT for this site as it gets!

Who cares about the car being OT, I am talking about Route 66!

My 31 Pontiac is too slow and my 36 GMC is too hard on gas (and I'm not made of money) and is really small inside. I have a lot of cars I could take, but this is for my EXP/LN7 club and also needs to be on a budget.

Thanks for the link Magnus! (now that trip sounded great!)

I agree with you, it's the trip, not in what ride you'd take. Enjoy and keep us posted.

I had one of those in the 80's. My insurance company dropped me because they considered it a "sports car" Had it while I was divorced took my sons camping once and pulled my pop up camper with it :p, glad we didn't have to go too far :D

Here is a link to Road Trip USA http://www.roadtripusa.com/routes/route66/route66.html.

Lots of cool info and sites to see along the route. I would love to make that trip in my 41 some day

Thanks Magnus, I would love to do it in something like the 58 you used, maybe I'll do it in my 61 Monarch sometime or one of my other cars eventually though if I'm lucky!

Awesome! Just like in Alberta! ;) Can I bring my own stick?

LOL, there's no accounting for taste, and I have 7 of them... plus about 70 pre 1961 cars and trucks!

Mine tried the same thing on me, but I was able to convince them that a 90HP front drive car is hardly a sports car, once I told them it basically an Escort they were fine with it. These things corner really well, but are gutless when compared to anything "sporty"

But they are tough, easy to fix, comfortable, and unusual, so it should be okay for this, plus being a two seater with a huge cargo area is good if I find anything I want to bring home!

And thanks everyone for the links, it's all greatly appreciated!

Yeah but my stick has a nail in it... plus I have a brick on a rope!;)

So often I have had that thought, but I'm in Alberta, and pretty much everyone has guns here too. (so they might shoot back)
