I am sure many of you guys will recognize this fine specimen of the first of its kind. It's the 76 model so it still has the six in it and the hydro. But man the car is a very solid remarkably intact rust free survivor mobile. A set of Americans, color sand and buff, and the usual clean up and brake stuff, of course some altitude adjustment is in order as well. Also seems like a good place for my Blown Olds Engine. Was going to put it in my Roadster, but.........

Looking forward to getting this one on the road for sure.

    Happy New Year Guys!

My dad got his first new car in 1949, an Olds 76 two door, but his was a fastback. Like yours, it was black and a six with hydramatic. He loved the passing rear, where all you had to do was hit the gas pedal, and the transmission would downshift and the car would jump forward; as I remember it was a lot better performer than his old '37 Olds. He called the passing gear "Whirlaway", which I always thought was the factory term for this. Does anyone remember if this is correct?

The car seems to be in excellent shape. It will be tempting to replace the 6 with V8, but I think I'd try to resist the urge. IIRC, these were 239 ci, the same as a flathead Ford.

Pretty car, looks to be in very good original condition, I bet it'll clean up really nice. Any idea on the history of it, was it parked for 50 years or something?

Whirlaway was the sales departments name for the 49 hydro.
the 6 was called the big 6 257 ci.

Cut and buff man...I would be really slow on the cut. Maybe start at 1500wet and finish at 2000. That's a really nice survivor.

Very nice car . I wonder if any of the body panels fit or are close to a Chevy . I have never seen an Olds 6 cyl . Does it look like a Chevy 6 ? Pretty neat with the hydro .

I helped a Bud build a 49 Chebbie Coupe , from that day on I wanted a 49 or 50 Olds coupe . Looks like you found a nice one . Keep it alive , and drive it like you stole it !

Doors & deck lid fit, as well as all the glass … that's about it. The Olds 6 has nothing in common with a Chevrolet.

  18. Nice find, I recently scored a 50 Coupe myself and my plans are similar to yours, less the cool blown motor!!

Small point, but aren't the last two pictured '50's (taillights and one-piece windshields). Great cars, though; I am especially partial to the fastbacks.

They are flatheads. Interesting question about the body panels. I would be inclined to think so, but have no real world knowledge. Anybody know for sure?

Some are the same some are close. The roof on Wasted was off a Chevy The out side skin was the same but the Olds had more internal bracing.Something like you get what you pay for. The rear fenders are not the same.

I had one like that in '61. Except it was green. I bought a '50 four door 88 and swapped in the motor and hydro. Straight bolt in. I think I gave it away when I went into the Army.

Very lucky man, love it. We never got coupes in Australia , I had to be happy with a more door. Dads Olds.jpg 46101445_1132309590267719_388888724349386752_n.jpg
