Hot Rods Picked up a 1929 Ford Roadster altered with an injected olds motor

    F prefix on stamped number on head was used in '61 and '62

    what was the stamped number on the block? or did I miss the ID info somewhere??

    With the Owens Cam decal, no Clay Smith but the word Cams and the name missing above the AUTOMOTIVE the car may have had a second life under a different owner. Maybe there is more to find out…

    371 and 394 were stamped on heads, cast numbers on block are a bit hard to decipher but if it has a '57-'58 crankshaft then that's more than likely what the block is too.

    Great find! That master cylinder is a 1954 Chevy item.

    I have a 303 with a shit ton of money stuck into it. You have the real deal from back in the day priceless . Fun motors I have a love affair with them.

  11. Looks like a great find! I love the early Olds engines. I run a blown 57' Olds 371" in my 34' coupe. Looking at your engine it appears you have Isky rocker arms which I have on a 55' 324" engine in another car. If you need more info on the Olds engine try calling Tony at Ross Racing engines in Niles Ohio

    I was amazed that this roadster was near us in the pits and that it was sponsored by Clay Smith Cams, so using my limited artistic skills, I drew what I thought the blue roadster could be from my prospective.

    The quiet days of the pandemic allowed me to draw two similar, but different versions.

    A 671 supercharged Oldsmobile version for the drags and a Potvin front supercharger for Bonneville. (Moon Discs with a more streamlined hood and sheet metal cowl area)

    It just amazes me that such a find existed. Now, it will get some of its glory and coolness back into today’s historic information. My brother would have thoroughly enjoyed this information and that it has survived this long.

    After our 1940 Willys Coupe build, racing and final end, our thoughts were to use the same 292 671 SBC motor and built a similar Altered Roadster. But, at the time of the fire recovery, my brother was putting out plenty of alternative stuff to get his mind off of the incident. Eventually, the roadster and Altered Sedans, plus several station wagons all went on a drawing notebook.

    Reality took over. We ended up with a 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery, a VW van, the endless surf world, and several desert racing motorcycles as a direction going away from drag racing.

    Continued good luck on the rebuild and future of the historic Altered Roadster. As I continue to read some of the old Drag News papers and check out the old photos, I will be on the lookout for other notifications from that time period of drag racing. still an awesome find!

    Thanks jnaki,as far as the exhaust goes did the car has headers that went under the frame like your drawings or do you remember what it had cuz all I got with the car was the flanges with the pipes cut off

    Wow! What an awesome find, just shows that. they are still out there. You have the start of a whole lot fun putting the puzzle back together.

    Yes it's going to be a puzzle. Need to figure out what transmission adapter this thing had and locate a bearing retainer for the Cadillac trans the rest shouldn't be too bad

    No trans. adapter as such needed, use a 1950 Olds. manual shift bell housing, (1950 only). As to bearing retainer, again 50 olds or 38-1953? Cadillac/Lasalle.

    Thanks guys I messaged them about the bellhousing. I'm going to talk to the guy that I bought it from and see if I can go back to the house and look around some more see if I can find the bell housing and other parts

    Well I scored a bellhousing and candlestick from Eddie here on the hamb. He's going to look around and thinks he has the throw out bearing assembly and clutch Fork too. I talked to the guy i got the car from and I'm going to go over this weekend and search around for more stuff ,I think the headers that were on the wall belong to the car from the pics I've seen. The flanges were cut off of them and didn't look right but now looking at the pictures they may be the correct ones. Thanks everybody for the great encouragement and info

    More on Itow's Automotive 1959 he built engine builder. Ed Pinks first Dragster . Featured finished 1961 Rod and Custom.

    • 303 - 3.75" (49-53);
    • 324 - 3.875" (54-56);
    • 371 - 4.00" (57-58); and
    • 394 - 4.125"

    Flywheels:
    • Oldsmobile 1949 - 1953 (303) - 145 teeth
    • Oldsmobile 1954 - 1960 (324 + 371) - 176 teeth
    • Oldsmobile 1961 - 1964 (late 371 + 394) - 176 teeth
    303 and 324s are internally balanced, external balancing started with the 371 in 1957. Awesome find with providence
