    Bottrill wheels
Big Lizzie was built by Frank Bottrill, the Australian inventor of the Bottrill "Dreadnaught Wheel". Mr Bottrill fitted these wheels to several traction engines from 1907-08, also tractors and another very large tractor and wagon used for haulage in 1910, before building this huge "Desert Train", finished in 1916. These photos come from a book Big Lizzie: the story of a Man and a Machine by Ron Malin. The engine used was a 60 hp Blackstone, single cylinder engine. <!-- / message -->

Can you imagine just how exhilarating this contest must have been for the spectators.

Incredible. I never knew they raced penny-farthings. In the 20 years to follow that event, think of what those same spectators might have witnessed. Car races first on county fairgrounds and later in huge organized events, motorcycle races on board tracks, and land speed records that were mind boggling. We think our era is the only one with fast paced technological changes? Not so...

Some car dealers towed a motorcycle behind the customer's car, so their employee could ride back to the shop after delivering the repaired car.

I think we have seen this car before in front of the artificial limb store.

Old eagles eyes 37kid picked up on the number of spokes in the wheels. In this photo they show up clearly.

I really like this photo of an early endurance run that was held in Minnesota. The horse helping it's replacment, which in this case is a little Metz.....
