Technical Photo Request - Thru Frame Steering

Please share photos of your THRU-FRAME Hot Rod Steering preferably built with an F-100 steering box. I want to build a similar set-up and need an education.

Particularly interested in seeing close-up linkage shots both inside/outside the front rails, inside front LH wheel, etc.

Tell me about any challenges, pitfalls, watch outs, etc.

Kicking things off with one of my favorites, the McMullen Roadster...

Not F-1, but was told it was a Corvair

 

I know this isn't through the frame. I don't know what type of car you're building but this is what I came up with for mine just to give you another idea or option. It's a f1 box. I cut the triangle head off and turned the outside diameter down and made a special clamp to fit it and just welded it to the top of the frame.

 

I’m building a 32 Roadster, but open to ideas from all car types. Don’t forget shots of the linkage behind the LH wheel...

This is a 32 box relocated on a 32 frame.

 

This is a Gemmer steering box (40-48 Ford) intended for a Chris Craft. It accepts a Ford pitman arm, and a Ford steering wheel. It fits an application where the pitman arm needs to point up. This would fit a Zeed frame car. It's for sale, contact me if you want.

 

I have a through the frame steering box but it is not F-100. It is from a mid sixties Dodge pickup. Mounts about the same way. The advantages are : These are available up to 1971. I checked online with the various online parts houses like RockAuto and they have them. The pitman arm is a clamp onto the splines unit that looks about the same as F-100 if that matters to you. The steering column is not integral with the box so you can use whatever. I'm using a shortened 1968 Chev pickup column from a 4 speed truck so I don't have to deal with removing a gearshift lever and can run 4 way flashers, cancelling cam and an easy to hook up horn button. You don't need any wedge shaped spacer to align your steering column. In order to get enough clearance with my split radius rod, I welded up the hole for the drag link and drilled and tapered it to go in from the other side.

 

Original hot rod hairpin setup, those welds have worked that way for 5 decades in my possession. Not intended for mature audiences ! Always have told people, she’s a raspy ol’ 3W:

 

F-100 in a deuce frame, later F-100 pitman arm (that accepts a tie rod end instead of a ball), and a couple pictured of an F-100 box with flange trimmed to fit an "A" frame.

 

'51ish F100 box in '32 frame. Requires thin spacer under top rear bolt to mount the box perpendicular to the axle

 

Does anyone know a good steering box restoration specialist? I’m looking for a 56 or 57 F-100 box and pitman arm. I want all traditional linkage for my Deuce Roadster.

 

F-1 box on my ‘34 Chevy truck. I had to make a sector extension/pitman arm to clear the hairpins.

 

Pretty sure '53-'56 F-100 is the box you want; thinking something changed in '57 up

 

Thanks for the advice. I know the McMullen Roadster had a 56 box. Good enough for me! Anyone know where I can find a rebuilt unit...or get an old core rebuilt?

 

I pleased you posted that photo. I have what I believe to be the same box. I have been unable to determine what it was exactly. I salvaged it from a 1949 Correct Craft hull. I was told it was original to the boat.
It appears to be in very good condition with no leaks and no play in the mechanisms. Glad I saved it.

 

Talk to Neil Jennings in Atascadero ca. He’s an early ford steering expert. He can make you any style, he even has his own steering boxes casted and he does all the machine work.
