Of the many many custom shops that were around during the heyday of customizing, I like their work as well as any. They seemed to have an eye for proportion and style which some of the others did not. Thanks for the photos.

Thanks for posting some more twochops, keep on going if you can.
What's the story with the album? Is this something you put together from your own photos, or stuff you collected along the way?
Which ever it's pretty cool to see the old collection.
    Thanks, LSM

Sweet! Seems daring to take that beautiful burgundy scraper out on the salt flats, though.

Thanks for all those cool pics ! I really like the Carson topped Merc and the Conway Ford is one of the best unchopped radical Kustoms ever. What's the story behind those pics at the Barris place ?

  20. This album is a real piece of history that really needs to be saved. These are unbelievable photos and you have to wonder how many other albums are fading into history and thrown away as the older guys leave us.
The first shot showing the 52 Ford convertible is, I THINK, the car of Rev. Larry Ernst that he showed under an assumed name (Grant Macklin?). He was a Catholic priest and owned the famous Barris chopped 51 Chevy Hardtop and then did this 52 Ford convertible.

He did it under an assumed name because he didn't want the church to know that he was a hotrodder at heart.

I saw it drive by my high school when I was a kid. I was sitting in class and it rolled by outside the window in the snow going real slow and the vapor smoke curling out of the twin pipes into the cold Michigan day. Wow, I can remember that plain as day.

The shots at Barris' shop are really cool, and if I had to guess I might say that this album may have come from someone having to do with Rev. Larry Ernst. Shots from all over the country, and Ernst was in Cal. for his work with Barris and was based in Toledo, and had work done at Clarkkaiser. This is all speculation on my part, but I have seen both of these cars in my youth in person. I lived in the Detroit area when I was a kid.

  21. In the photo in front of Barris' shop, could that be the Hirahita Merc? Rear window looks like it and I see 53 Buick side trim. That is really a cool photo.

There is another shot at Barris' with the fat fendered conv against the back fence that I bet is the Dean Jefferies car.

The Conway car is really one of the treasures of that era and he was one of the unrecognized heroes of Barris' shop.

These pictures are priceless. Worth a bump for sure. Please send more, and the story, what is the story.

Thank you posting pics- they're fantastic!

Does anyone know what this back window might be out of?

it looks HUGE, but I really like it.

I started my album in about 195? The old style black pages with black glue
on corners. When kustoms came back I took it to car shows for about
10 years---I traded with about 3 or 4 guys then stop trading.

  27. Man, you had to be around somewhere when I was a kid growing up in Dearborn in the fifties. What a fantastic collection of pictures! I wish I had the sense to take more pictures when I was young. I saw so many cool things in Mich. but the pictures from California are amazing. To hang around at Barris must have been something.
In the late fifties many if the Detroit guys went to CA. Bill Hines, Dick Dean, Chili Catallo all were out there during that time. I used to hang out at Bill Hines shop in Michigan.
Look forward to more pictures if you have time.
    Thanks for the memories, Sir.

Sharp eye, there! Yea, the roof looks like it. I think I can see hardtop style window frames in this lightened pic.
