I think all of Detroit switched 64 1/2.
Except AMC might have kept generators till 1974 ? :)

1962 was the first alt. on a chevy but it was strange looking! I used to work in an old gen./starter rebuild shop in the 70`s.The regulator had 6 connections on it.We could have rebuilt the alt. but the reg. in 1970 was no longer available. The brackets were the same so we put a late 60`s alt and reg and changed the factory wiring.

An easy way for me to remember is the '63 vette was first with alternators.

The answers given are for when did alternators became standard equipment. I was surprised to find this booklet. I figured it would win a few "bar bets":D

  11. Squirrell is rite on both counts, the first Chevy II's (1962) had alternators, but other Chevs still had generators I'm thinkin. All had alt. in 63.

I looked in the chevy parts book, it lists generators and parts for cars thru 62, and alternators and parts starting in 62. And there were a few different models of alternators, some were pretty wierd (round steel case), others were the normal delcotron we're used to from the 60s.

tommy: Since when is a Ford a Chevy? :)

It's not. I was just showing that alternators were available options earlier than most of us thought. Although I've never seen one in person.

Strange that Ford had them available in the 50s but were about the last to switch over on all cars in 65

I think Chevy was the same deal as Pontiac--optional in '62, standard in '63. Chrysler led the pack here by making them standard in '60.

  16. This must be the case, because I just was looking at a bone stock, one owner 62 ss Impala today, and it has a generator. This is a 283 powerglide car, thats never been apart.

I could be wrong, (which frequently I am!) But I thought I read somewhere that '62 was the first year if the vehicle was equipped with air-conditioning. No air then a generator. '63 was alternator across the board.
