For all you people using citric acid, beets, molasses, muriatic acid and all these other homemade brews do yourself a favor. Invest 20 bucks in a good quality metal prep with zinc.Wipe your parts down with it when you're done This will leave a zinc coating that will prevent flash rusting, you can store your parts for months. And most importantly it will prolong the corrosion properties of your paintwork for years to come.

Just an update for anyone who comes across this post:

I did the zinc metal prep, ospho, and it lasted about a month in Houston garage in summer with 90% humidity outside, 60-70% in garage before rust returned.

Did another ospho coat, washed off when wet (lots of discussion out there on that), used leaf blower to get everything dry and let it bake in 100 degree garage then hand wiped on Penetrol and it has been 4 months with no rust *knock on wood

First photo Us before, second is after. It’s a little shinny but not bad. It does show wipe marks in certain light but not a bad option to stop rust for cheap ($7) while saving up for paint job.
