My friend Pruitt worked with Paul Newman in a film called Noboby's Fool, back in '95 or so. He's worked with so many legendary actors that it's nuts; but working with Newman changed his life. He said he was the most humble and gracious guy you could ever imagine. Totally relaxed and natural on set; and just a very sweet guy to be around. Our gods are falling all around us, it seems. The idols of my youth are gone. The great role models of man-hood. And Paul Newman is just off the charts in terms of what he accomplished in one lifetime. Unbelievable to think of how great his loss will be felt, all around the world. He used his fame and his money and his position; as a tool to make other's lives better, not his own! How profoundly rare is character like that? May Paul Newman finally have the rest he has so greatly earned.
I cannot express the respect I had for him. Every one of his movies remain special to me and thousands of others. When I learned we could have a signature for our posts on the HAMB there was only one that I considered. After Cool Hand Luke came out my aunt said "that should be your life slogan, it describes you to a T". I would never compare myself to him on any level but having that line from that movie to explain me to myself has been a comfort of some measure when it seemed I was swimming against the tide of life. Most definitely rest in peace Mr. Neuman, not many like you pass this way. Frank
I remember the story where he smacked a cop in my town when he was going to Kenyon college......guess it "was a failure to comunicate"................happy trails Paul
"I can't swim!" "Swim? The fall's gonna kill ya!" "SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEIT!" A big curtain closed today. I think the first movie I noticed him in was "Harper" Although I had seen "A Cat on a Hot in Roof" that movie was all about Liz Taylor. A good man is gone. One of my all time favorite actors. He made a lot of great movies of course movies like the hustler and cool hand luke but there were some others like " the long hot summer " and " somebody up there likes me " the man was truely a great actor and to me he made a lot of these type of movies fun to watch.RIP to one of the great legends of film.God's speed to his soul.
Racing, acting, public service. If half the actors (For that matter politicians) did or cared half as much as he did, the world would be a much better place. RIP Sir.
6 years of open wheel racing I have seen Paul many times at the track. Always a kind man of few words who tried to stay low profile. I'm sure he's doing "hot laps" in a better place, RIP....... http://www.newman-haas.com/
To say this is a sad day is a complete understatement. A wonderful role model, too bad most of this generation can't really catch on. You will be terribly missed.
The Verdict is one of my favorites. R.I.P. Paul. Heavens reward for a life well lived is a long life. You lived a great life my friend.
